Ohio Wesleyan Uses 4-0 Run to Defeat Whittier
Freshman midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) scored to break a 4-4 tie and kick off a 4-0 fourth-quarter run that lifted Ohio Wesleyan over Whittier in non-conference play on Friday at Selby Field.
The Poets had scored the only goal of the third quarter, an even-strength goal by Kevin Looney, to even the score at 4-4 going into the final stanza.
Schnell worked free for an unassisted goal at the 10:38 mark, and sophomore attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) fielded a pass from senior attacker Shaun Crow (Darnestown, Md./The Bullis School) and whistled a shot into the Whittier goal just over a minute later to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 6-2.
Crow and junior attacker A.J. Pellis (Edmonton, Alberta/St. Francis Xavier) followed with scores just over a minute apart, capping an outburst of 4 goals in a span of 4:21.
Whittier got a goal from Ryan Kirkpatrick in the closing seconds to account for the 8-5 final.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in a rain-soaked first quarter, with senior midfielder Sean-Paul Mauro (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Short tallying goals less than 90 seconds apart for a 2-0 advantage, only to see the Poets respond with scores by Sam Russell and Colt Adams later in the period.
Crow and Mauro scored as the Bishops again moved to a 2-goal lead, but Daniel McQuade notched a man-up score in the waning minutes of the second quarter, and Looney's goal with 2:22 left in the third period set up the final 15 minutes of action.
Short and Crow each collected 2 goals and an assist for Ohio Wesleyan, while Mauro finished with 2 goals.
Sophomore Stephen Ford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) recorded 6 saves, with 3 of those coming in the fourth period.
Russell led the Poets with a goal and an assist. Robert Bazlen finished with 11 saves for the Poets.
