Hartwick Defense Shuts Down Wells for Victory

AURORA, NY Five different players registered two goals as Hartwick defeated Wells 12-1 on Saturday in Aurora, NY. The victory snaps a seven-game winless streak for the Hawks and ups their record to 6-8. It also marks the 12th straight win over the Express dating back to 1983.

The Hawks dominated the proceedings, outshooting their hosts by a 43-15 margin. 'Wick was just over two minutes away from its third shutout in program history before the Express got on the scoreboard. The game marked the fewest goals surrendered in a game for 'Wick since the Hawks blanked Ferrum 17-0 in 2005.

First-year attack Brittany McCabe (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) recorded two goals and an assist to pace the Hawks. Juniors Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland), Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon), and sophomores Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and Lindsay Zweigenhaft (Islip, NY/Islip) each added two goals.

Hartwick led 9-0 at halftime with six players making it into the scoring column. Walsh opened the scoring 2:34 into the game. McCabe, Walsh, and junior Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) each scored less than five minutes apart later in the half to extend the advantage to four.

Kennedy made it 5-0 with less than eight minutes remaining and Doyle scored the first of her two goals 1:40 later. The Hawks closed the half scoring three goals in the final minute. Doyle tallied with 52 ticks left, Zweigenhaft scored just five seconds later, and she tacked on her second with one second on the clock.

Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) set up McCabe within the first four minutes of the second half as the Hawks opened up a 10-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, Kennedy scored her second of the afternoon with McCabe registering the assist.

Senior defender Bianca Gianfrate (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) finished the Hawks' scoring with 7:11 left as she tallied for the first time of the season and just the second time in her career. Wells' Sarah Allen spoiled Hartwick's shutout bid with 2:03 remaining with an unassisted goal.

Keepers Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and Grace Suttell (Little Compton, RI/Providence Country Day) combined for eight saves for 'Wick. Kaye made four saves in the first 43 minutes. She also tied for a game-high with four ground balls. Suttell made four saves in the final 17 minutes of action.

Kennedy picked up a game-best three caused turnovers for the Hawks and a pair of draw controls. Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) cause two Express turnovers and grabbed two ground balls.

LaVaute, Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields), and Morgan Galipeau (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) also had two ground balls each. Zweigenhaft and Scicchitano secured two draws apiece.

Hartwick (6-8) closes out the regular season on Tuesday at Cazenovia.
