Generals Finish Strong to Defeat Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. Washington and Lee scored six of the last seven goals of the game to post a 12-8 victory over Randolph-Macon in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The game featured significant runs by both teams as the Generals (9-7, 5-2) jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter following a man-down goal by senior defenseman Thomas Jenkins (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) with 58 seconds left in the period.

The Yellow Jackets (8-6, 2-5) then went on a five-goal surge over a span of 7:28 during the second period to assume a 6-5 lead with 5:30 left in the half. First-year attackman Justin Butler (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) and sophomore midfielder Tim Rowe (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) each scored a pair of goals during the stretch for R-MC.

Senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) tied the score at 6-6 on an unassisted goal with 3:23 remaining, but first-year midfielder Jason Andrews (Hereford, Md./Hereford) gave the Yellow Jackets a 7-6 lead at the half following his unassisted goal at the 2:13 mark.

Washington and Lee tied the game at 7-7 on a goal by first-year midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) off a feed from sophomore midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) with 7:21 left in the third period. The goal was the first in a five-goal run that gave W&L a 11-7 lead with 10:10 remaining in the game.

Sophomore attackman Will Garrett (Purcellville, Va./Highland School) gave the Generals the lead for good when he scored unassisted just 1:39 into the fourth quarter. Sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored unassisted just 45 seconds later.

Sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) found the net unassisted another 56 seconds after Switala's goal for a 10-7 lead at the 11:32 mark. Garrett then capped the run with another unassisted tally at 10:10 as the Generals surged to their 15th-straight win over Randolph-Macon.

Means, Daw, Garrett and senior midfielder Drew Koeneman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) all scored two goals for W&L, while Heinsohn notched a pair of assists. Senior Ned Lundvall (Richmond, Va./Gilman) played all 60 minutes in goal and totaled eight saves.

Butler led Randolph-Macon with three goals, while Tim Rowe had two assists. Junior Jason Crawford (Burlington, Ont./Brock University) and sophomore Ryan Reechia (Towson, Md./Towson) both played in goal for the Yellow Jackets. Crawford started and made five saves (6 GA), while Reechia played the final 30 minutes and had four saves (6 GA).

With the win, Washington and Lee earned the No. 2 seed for the ODAC Tournament and will receive a first-round bye. The Generals will host the semifinals on Saturday against an opponent to be determined.
