Seventh-Ranked Stevens Grounds Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Seventh-ranked Stevens scored the first five goals of the game Saturday and was never seriously challenged thereafter as the Ducks went on to take a 19-6 men's lacrosse victory over Nazareth at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The loss was Nazareth's first of the season in Empire 8 Conference play as the Golden Flyers stand at 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the Empire 8. Stevens improved to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The Ducks dominated just about every phase of play with a 43-30 advantage in shots, a 49-40 edge in ground balls and a 16-13 edge in face-offs. Senior midfielder Brandon Faubert scored four goals and added one assist and now has a conference-best 50 goals on the season.

The Ducks scored on their first four shots of the game and Nazareth coach Rob Randall pulled starting goalie Tim Doyle in favor of Grant Williams. Nazareth got goals from C.J. Estes and Scott Castle before the first quarter expired to cut the Ducks' lead to 5-2, but Stevens scored five more times in the second quarter, including two goals in the final minute of the half, to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

Stevens goals by Faubert and Chris Laurita opened the third quarter, but Nazareth went on a mini scoring run with consecutive goals by Brian Wright, Collin Clark and Wright again to close within 12-5. Faubert, however, scored again before the third quarter ended and Stevens added six more goals in the final 15 minutes to expand their lead.

In addition to Wright's two goals, Castle had a goal and two assists and Estes had one goal and one assist for Nazareth. Senior Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar also had a goal.

Nine different players scored for Stevens, including Laurita and Nicholas Philippi, who scored three goals each. Kevin Rose, Christian Saley and Harry Dorne each scored twice.

Nazareth has already clinched an E8 playoff berth, but now is locked in a tie for second place with Stevens. RIT leads the conference with a 6-0 record. The Golden Flyers close their regular-season schedule next Saturday at second-ranked RIT at 1:00 p.m.
