No. 12 Haverford Defeats Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Junior Max Hubbard recorded a hat trick by the end of the first half, but it wasn't enough to help Swarthmore (4-11, 2-6 CC) overcome a 5-1 first-period deficit, as homestanding Haverford (11-3, 6-2 CC) defeated the Garnet 10-6 on Saturday afternoon.

Swarthmore put itself in an early hole as the Fords came out of the gates quick, netting five goals in the first quarter while Hubbard was the only Garnet player to find the cage.

Swat turned things around in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to climb back to within a goal of Haverford.

Sophomore Zach Belden started the Garnet run in the second quarter when a pass from freshman Jonathan Molloy found Belden in front of the net for Swat's first of its 4-0 scoring run.

Hubbard hammered in the next two for Swarthmore for his 20th and 21st goals of the season and second hat trick of the season.

Midway through the third quarter, freshman Brendan Conway scrored Swarthmore's fourth straight goal to tie the game at five apiece.

Unfortunately the Ford's answered with a rally of their own, going on a three-goal scoring tear to close our the third quarter and reclaim a three goal lead, 8-5.

Sophomore Wes Marcik tried to spark the Garnet offense again in the fourth, blasting an unassisted goal past the Haverford netminder with 10 minutes left to play in game.

Haverford's defense stepped up and held off Swarthmore for the rest of the quarter snuck two more goals in on the Garnet to take home the 10-6 win.

Swarthmore outplayed the Fords throughout the entire game, outshooting them 39-16, winning 10 faceoffs to Haverfords eight and edging the Fords 42-38 in ground balls.

The Garnet also turned the ball over only 18 times in the game while Haverford gave it up 28 times.

The game ends Swarthmore's season of ups and downs as the Garnet finished with a 4-11, 2-6 CC record.

Despite its record, Swat played well this season as seven of its 11 losses were by margins of three goals or less including three by one goal.
