Merchant Marine Sunk by Visiting Catholic

BAYVILLE, N.Y. Fighting through tough weather conditions, CUA rode a 7-1 second quarter to down Merchant Marine 13-8 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals received five goals from Chris Fuccillo, four from Jimmy Sinnott and three from Brendan Englert to improve to 11-4 on the season, including a 3-1 mark within the Landmark Conference.

Merchant Marine Academy's Sean Zakow scored the game's first goal just 59 seconds into the contest but Fuccillo and Sinnott answered with two straight for CUA and the Cardinals grabbed a 2-1 lead after one quarter.

CUA then ran off a 4-0 run to begin the second quarter with goals coming from Sinnott, Fuccillo and two from Brendan Englert. Tony Beranek's score with 4:46 to play before halftime made it a 6-2 game, but Fuccillo, Sean Cummins and Englert answered for the Cardinals to send the visitors into halftime ahead by seven.

Sinnott struck first in the third to help CUA extend to a 10-2 advantage, but two straight Mariner goals made it a 10-4 game with 11 minutes remaining in the quarter.

Fuccillo's fourth goal of the afternoon put the Cardinals in front 11-4, but Merchant Marine Academy kept things interesting, closing the quarter with two straight goals to make the score 11-6.

Andrew Kratsch's score with 10:27 then pulled the Mariners to within 11-7, while Robert Atkinson's goal less than three minutes later made it an 11-8 game. CUA ended any hopes of a Mariners comeback though with back-to-back goals by Sinnott and Fuccillo in a span of two minutes to seal the road win for the Cardinals.

CUA held a 36-20 advantage in shots, including 14-4 in the second quarter, and the Cardinals forced the Mariners into 25 turnovers on the day.

CUA won 12 of 21 face-offs and were successful on 19 of 21 clear attempts. In goal for the Cardinals Sean McKenna stopped eight shots in 60 minutes of action.

Shawn Kane got the start in goal for the Mariners and he sent back nine shots, before Pat Sullivan finished the game and stopped two shots. Samuel Heard led the home team in ground balls with six.

CUA has one regular season game remaining, which will take place on Saturday April 30 inside Cardinal Stadium when the Cardinals host Scranton on Senior Day. The opening face-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
