Cobleskill Runs by Wells to Punch NEAC Ticket

SUNY Cobleskill punched their ticket to the 2011 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament for the second consecutive season on Saturday afternoon, as the Fighting Tigers made quick work of the visiting Wells Express at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex by a score of 21-9.

The victory puts Cobleskill at 6-7 overall on the year and finishes out the team's NEAC season with a 4-2 mark. The Fighting Tigers will play in the conference tournament's semifinals on Wednesday May 4th at Keuka College in Keuka Park, N.Y. at a yet to be determined time. Wells falls to 3-7 overall on the year including a 1-4 NEAC record.

The Orange & Black used a nine goal second period to take a 14-5 halftime advantage and never looked back as sophomore attackman Peter Gonzalez, West Islip, N.Y., West Islip High School, blistered the visitors for seven goals and five assists on the afternoon with help from freshman attackman Kevin Whitcomb, Baldwinsville, N.Y., Baldwinsville High School, who netted four goals in the contest.

Junior midfielder Jeff Fitchtner, Chili, N.Y., Gates-Chili High School/Finger Lakes Community College, continued his stellar season with three goals and five assists while sophomore attackman Steve Hughes, Wallkill, N.Y., Wallkill High School, added three goals for the home team.

The Cobleskill specialty players made strong contributions in the victory as senior long stick midfielder Alex Bendon, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School/Hudson Valley Community College, picked up 16 ground balls and senior midfielder Cory Tizzio, Franklin Square, N.Y., St. Mary's High School, won 18 of 20 face-offs to go with 10 ground balls.

The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Wednesday April 27th when they host Castleton State College from Castleton, Vt. in non-league action beginning at 4:00 p.m.
