No. 16 Colgate Falls to No. 12 Bucknell

HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/23/11) No. 16 Colgate suffered its first Patriot League setback of the season when it fell to No. 12 Bucknell on Saturday night. Despite holding the lead for most of the first half, a dry spell in the the second half put the Raiders in a hole they could not climb out of.

The seniors led the way in their final home game, scoring five of the team's seven goals. Senior Ben McCabe led the team with two goals while classmate Andrew Mould had one goal and two assists. Seniors Rob Bosco and Dave Tucciarone as well as junior Jeff Ledwick and freshman Jimmy Ryan added one goal apiece.

Colgate (9-4, 5-1 PL) came out to a quick start with an early goal from Bosco just 34 seconds into play with help from Mould to give his team the 1-0 lead. The Raiders continued to attack Bucknell's net but then a flurry of attempts from the Bison at the other end resulted in them scoring an equalizer at the 13:06 mark.

Determined to reclaim its early lead, Colgate soon found its offensive rhythm once again with a pair of goals in the fifth minute and then a third with just 3:15 left to take a 4-1 lead. Ryan scored the first goal with help from Mould while McCabe scored the following two, with assists from senior Jim Carroll and sophomore Peter Baum.

Feeling the pressure, Bucknell picked up its pace and after a much needed timeout, was able to find the net at the 3:07 mark to reduce the scoring margin to two goals. Two minutes later, Ledwick restored Colgate's three-goal lead with help from Baum, but then two quick goals from the Bison in the final minute of play reduced the Raiders' lead to 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.

After a fruitful first period that consisted of nine goals, both teams came out searching for more. However, despite creating numerous scoring opportunities, it was Bucknell that was able to score the lone goal of the period at the 7:15 mark to tie the game at 5-5 at half time.

Colgate then hit a dry spell in the second half. During this time, the Bison were able to take the lead for the first time in the game at the 11:32 mark, and then extend it to four points with a trio of goals in the final 10 minutes of the period to take the 9-5 lead. The Raiders attempted to spark their offense but could not find the net.

In the final 15 minutes of play, Colgate came out to an aggressive start, looking to reduce the scoring margin and regain the lead it once had. However a productive Bison offense that was already on a 7-0 scoring run, was able to find two more goals at the 13:44 and 8:13 marks to extend their lead to 11-5.

It was not until the 8:04 mark that the Raiders were able to end their 39 minute and 25 second scoreless period with an unassisted goal from Tucciarone followed by a goal from Mould at the 5:38 mark to reduce the score to 11-7. Bucknell then found a 12th goal in the final minutes of play and despite some last minute scoring attempts from Colgate, one of which hit the pipe, the team could not make up the deficit, suffering its first loss since March 15.

Junior goalkeeper Jared Madison had eight saves for the Raiders with Kyle Feeney had eight stops for the Bison.

The team completed league play with a 5-1 record, matching the best start in program history since 2009. With the loss, Colgate clinched the No. 2 seed going into the 2011 Patriot League Tournament and will face No. 3 seed Army in the semi finals, which will take place next weekend at host and No. 1 seed Bucknell.
