Goldstein Steals Show as #6 Dowling Shocks #5 Stonehill

Easton, Mass. - Rachael Goldstein made eleven second half saves as #6 Dowling defeated #5 Stonehill on the road 13-8. With the win, Dowling improves to 12-2 while Stonehill falls to 13-2.

The Skyhawks took an early 2-0 lead scoring two goals in the first three minutes. The Golden Lions answered with six unanswered goals from five different goal scorers. Samantha Stavish scored her second at 8:40 to increase the Golden Lions' comfortable cushion to four.

Stonehill would cut into the deficit on a fast break goal from Mary Lee Mahony and an unassisted tally from Sam Lynot and quickly got back into the game at 6-4, the closest the Skyhawks would be for the remainder of the game. Kelly Cefalu added a late goal and Dowling would take a 7-4 lead in the break.

Rachael Goldstein was the story in the second half. The senior goalkeeper held Stonehill to 1-10 on free position shots, 1-13 in the game. She finished with 17 saves and kept the potent Skyhawk offense quiet and unable to climb back into the game. Cefalu and Brooke Witkowski each scored two goals in the half, the game winner coming from Cefalu on a dish from classmate Cassandra Cronin at the 19:34 mark.

Witkowski once again lead all scorers, finding the back of the net three times and handing out four assists. Cefalu and sophomore Nicolle Moran each had three goals and Stavish finished with two. The Skyhawks defense kept Dowling's leading goal scorer, Casandra Cronin off the board.

"This is a huge win for our program and keeps us on track for our ultimate goal of earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament" said Head Coach Kerri McCabe. "We will enjoy this, but will remained focused and are cognitive of the challenges ahead."

Brianna Falese finished with nine draw controls, and Dowling controlled the draw the entire game winning 16 of 23. Stonehill out shot Dowling 31-29 and scooped up twice as many groundballs, 30-15.

All-American Sam Lynot had four goals for the Skyhawks and fellow All-American Rebecca Moore had 10 saves in the net.

Dowling returns to action next Wednesday, 5/4 as they travel to Queens in ECC action. First draw is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
