Geneseo Knocks Oswego from Playoff Contention

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Oswego State was eliminated from playoff contention on Tuesday after suffering an 18-7 loss to Geneseo at South Athletic Field. Oswego State fell to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference with the loss, while the Blue Knights improved to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC.

The Lakers stuck with the Blue Knights for the majority of the first half until Geneseo closed out the period with six consecutive goals for an 11-4 lead at intermission.

The Lakers held a 2-1 lead following goals by Erin Cummings and Rachael Raffa early in the first half before Geneseo scored four straight markers. However, Oswego State fought to keep the margin tight as it received goals from Raffa and Cummings to make the score 5-4 with 10:54 to play in the stanza. Caroline Buonocore netted her third goal of the game less than a minute later to trigger a 6-0 Blue Knight run to close out the first half. Geneseo outshot the Lakers, 25-9, in the first half, while Oswego State also committed 15 turnovers.

The Blue Knights continued to control the ball in the second half as they put the game out of reach by scoring the first four goals of the second half before Corinne Marsh stopped the streak with an unassisted goal at 9:36. Geneseo posted three more goals, but Laker seniors Kelly Schroeder and Amanda Hecox tallied the final two scores to make the final decision, 18-7.

Oswego State goalie Ashlee Engel registered the loss with 14 saves and 12 goals allowed in nearly 46 minutes. Nicole Nalle posted three saves and six goals in 14 minutes in the second half. Blue Knight goalie Annie Smith earned the win with eight saves and five goals allowed in 48 minutes. Julie Bernatzky came on in the final 12 minutes to make one save with two goals. Buonocore paced Geneseo with six goals followed by two goals and four assists from Emily Haggerty.

The Lakers travel to Elmira on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. against the Soaring Eagles.
