Rutgers Bests Villanova in Big East Match

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 26, 2011) – Rutgers (9-6, 3-4 Big East) downed Villanova (5-9, 1-5 Big East) 13-10 Tuesday evening at Yurcak Field. RU was led by senior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) and junior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.), who each tallied four goals.

Rutgers outshot Villanova 34-19, including a 19-5 advantage in the first half. The Scarlet Knights also owned 16 of the 25 draw controls on the night.

The Scarlet Knights –who never trailed in the game – took a 7-3 lead into the locker room. Senior attacker Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.J.) started RU off with an unassisted goal just two minutes into the contest. Welsh gave Rutgers a 2-0 advantage with a coast-to-coast score into the top corner of the net.

Welsh registered another score, this time with an assist from senior attacker Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.) into the bottom right corner of the net. Marino added a goal of her own, putting the Scarlet Knights up 4-1.

After the two squads traded goals, Villanova's Justine Donodeo brought the Wildcats within two on a cut in front of the RU net. Steinberg rattled off two goals before the half – including one with just 1:04 to go in the stanza – to give the Scarlet Knights a four-goal cushion.

Rutgers came out of the break with two quick scores, and scored six of the first seven goals in the second period, as Marino blasted a shot past Amanda Hirschfeld to start the RU flurry just 40 seconds into the stanza. Welsh corralled a nifty pass from Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) just 28 seconds later to earn a hat trick.

After a Donodeo goal by Villanova, the Scarlet Knights posted the next four goals – including two by Steinberg – to take a 13-4 lead, the largest of the game. The final goal by Steinberg was scored off a free position shot that the midfielder dumped into the top right corner.

The Wildcats made a late rally, scoring the final six goals to cut the lead to three, but it would not be enough as Rutgers held on for the win.

Sophomore Lily Kalata (Manorville, N.Y.) notched her eighth win of the season, making three saves and picking up six ground balls to lead the RU defense. Sophomore Aimee Chotikul (Baltimore, Md.) also saw time between the pipes, registering four saves.

Rutgers will return to action on Sunday, May 1, when it hosts Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field. The game will serve as Senior Day for five Scarlet Knights.
