Sippel and Verillo Hit Milestones in Win Over Eastern

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 26, 2011) - Senior Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), the career leader in goals at Alvernia, netted her 200th career goal and sophomore Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored her 100th and the Crusaders (10-5, 7-4) moved one step closer to the conference playoffs with a 22-16 win over Eastern (6-8, 6-5) Tuesday afternoon in a game shortened six-plus minutes due to lightning.

Sippel and Verrillo are the second and third players on the Crusader roster to reach a significant milestone this season. Junior Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) surpassed 100 career goals in the second game of the season and currently sits at 129 for her career.

Tuesday's game was all about runs in the first half. Alvernia jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to watch Eastern pour in five straight for a 5-4 lead. The Crusaders came back with six in a row to regain a commanding 10-5 lead then a run of three of the final four of the half left the host Crusaders up 12-8 at the break.

Alvernia opened the second half with back-to-back tallies, the second a free position goal from Verrillo giving her 99 for her career. She tallied an unassisted goal for no. 100 at the 18:03 mark of the second half--a goal that put the Crusaders up 16-12 and sparked a run of four straight that ended with no. 200 for Sippel on a free position shot with 15:31 to play.

After Eastern scored to stem the tide Alvernia pounded the net for three more goals and a 22-13 lead with 9:39 to go. Eastern answered with three of its own to cut the gap to six goals before lightning forced the game's end.

Alvernia will close the regular season Friday at Widener. A win agains the Pride would put the Crusaders fourth heading into the playoffs next week.
