Q4 Rally Not Enough in Oswego Loss to Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. - A furious fourth-quarter charge with three goals was not enough to help Oswego State overcome a six-goal deficit in the final 15 minutes, as the Lakers suffered an 11-7 loss at Potsdam on Wednesday.

The Bears led 5-3 at halftime, but broke the game wide open with five goals in the third quarter, while Oswego posted just one goal. The Lakers dropped to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in the league. The win clinched a playoff spot for Potsdam in the SUNYAC, as it improved to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter before Britt Leone scored the first of a team-high three goals with 4:44 left in the stanza. Both squads scored before the end of the frame with Oswego State's goal coming from the stick of Casey Balzer to make the score 4-2. Each team registered goals in the second with Balzer recording the Laker score, as Oswego State went into halftime trailing 5-3 despite outshooting the home team by a margin of 23-14.

Potsdam's Robbie Ashlaw opened the scoring in the third quarter, but Andy Lever answered back for the Lakers after putting away a pass from Adam Jean. However, the Bears closed out the period with four goals, including two from Zeppy O'Geen, to take a 10-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

Derek Frost scored early in the fourth for Potsdam, but Oswego State kept fighting as Leone tallied two more goals to bring his season total to 16 and added a goal by Brad Teal. The Lakers simply ran out of time, though, as Potsdam posted the win.

Oswego State outshot the Bears, 48-28, but the Lakers were only able to get 17 of those shots on goal. The visitors also posted 24 groundballs compared to 14 for Potsdam. Laker goalie Ian O'Brien posted the loss with eight saves on 19 shots on net. Bear goalie Pat Corbine finished with ten saves.

Oswego State closes out the season on Saturday when it travels to Brockport to face the Golden Eagles for a 1:00 p.m. tilt.
