North Carolina Boys' Lacrosse Playoff Preview - NCHSAA

What to Expect This Year

This year's tournament will mark the second season that the state has officially sanctioned lacrosse. Myers Park won the inaugural title last season and is back to defend its championship once again. However, this year's bracket is filled with about a half-dozen title contenders making for what should be one exciting road to the championship.

Looking at the top half of the bracket, Hoggard, Apex, Cardinal Gibbons, and East Chapel Hill can be considered the heavyweights. In fact, those four squads have just six losses between them. As for the bottom half of the bracket, look for Northwest Guilford, Lake Norman, RJ Reynolds and Charlotte Catholic to be the favorites to reach the sectional round. Lake Norman is the only unbeaten team in this year's tournament (15-0). The Wildcats return practically their entire starting lineup from '10 that went 15-3 and it has showed all season long. The attack trio of Max Copeland, Danny Brown and Will Scott combined for 128 goals in the regular season.

Expect experience to play a key factor in this tournament, particularly with so many teams in the hunt. With that said, Charlotte Catholic's seventh-ranked strength of schedule could make the difference when games get tight. Also, the teams entering tournament play on a hot streak should find some immediate success. For instance, East Chapel Hill enters play riding the coattails of an eight-game winning streak, which includes an overtime win over highly-regarded Hoggard. Midfielder Chandler Zirkle has been a major force for the Wildcats down the stretch and enters tourney play with 78 points on the season.
