Castleton Rallies to Defeat Framingham State

Framingham, Mass. Freshman Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) converted a free position shot for the game winner with 3:34 remaining to lift Castleton to a come from behind 11-9 win over Framingham State in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Spartans remain in second place in the NEWLA at 5-1 and 10-4 overall. The Rams fall to 4-9 on the season and 3-3 in conference.

The Rams controlled the game in the first half opening up a 5-2 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Junior Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) scored three of the Rams first five goals.

The momentum in the game shifted late in the first half as play was halted with just over two minutes remaining due to lightening. When the game resumed, Castleton controlled the pace of play and increased their offensive pressure.

The Spartans scored two quick goals in the opening two minutes of the second to pull within one at 5-4 as Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, NH) and Marie Van Der Kar (Manchester, Vt.) each converted free position shots.

Senior Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, Mass.) scored for the Rams with 26:31 remaining to push the lead back to two.

After trading goals, Castleton scored three in a row to tie the game and take their first lead, 8-7, with 11 minutes left. Junior Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.) scored two goals on the run and Clark found the back of the net unassisted for her first of the game.

Corrales tied the game for the Rams with 6:30 on the clock, but Angela Mazzola (Centerport, NY) scored off a Van Der Kar assist and Clark scored on a free position shot to put the Spartans ahead for good.

Sophomore Chelsea Temple (Rutland, Vt.) converted a free position shot for the Rams with just over two minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Rams would get as Castleton maintained possession and ran out the clock adding an insurance goal with a second left in the game.

Sophomore Kelsey Turner (Billerica, Mass.) played well in goal for the Rams making 11 saves, while Castleton goalie Ashly Neal (York Beach, Maine) also made 11 stops and picked up the win.

The Rams close out the regular season on Saturday as they host conference leader Bridgewater State at noon, while the Spartans host Worcester State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
