Castleton Cruises by Worcester State for NEWLA Win

CASTLETON, Vt. - Senior Liz Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) scored a team-high five goals and became the fifth Spartan to register 100 for her career as Castleton State College defeated Worcester State University 18-6 in NEWLA action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Worcester State scored just 35 seconds into the contest as Colleen Manning (Plainville, Mass.) scored the first of her five goals on the day. Just one minute later Marie Van Der Kar (Manchester, Vt.) evened the score, and 20 seconds later Castleton had a lead it would not relinquish on an Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) marker.

Castleton reeled off six more before Manning got her second of the game to make it 8-2, and the Spartans answered with another 6-1 run to end the first half with a 14-3 lead. Haggerty scored three during the surge, including her 31st of the season and 100th for her career with eight seconds remaining.

Van Der Kar, Mazzola and Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) each finished with three goals, while Stephanie Paproski posted four points on two goals and two assists. Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) added a goal and two assists and Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) rounded out the scoring with a single goal.

Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for the Lancers.

Senior Becki Duszak (Erieville, N.Y.) made seven saves to pick up her third win of the season. Haley Erickson (Saugus, Mass.) stopped seven shots in the loss.

Castleton improves to 11-4, 6-1 and will host a NEWLA Semifinal game on May 4 at a time and against an opponent still to be determined. Worcester States season ends at 2-10, 1-6.
