No. 4 Cortland Tops Geneseo in Shootout

CORTLAND, N.Y. Freshman Ashley Cook (Commack) recorded a career-high eight points on a career-best six goals and two assists to help lead fourth-ranked Cortland to an 18-13 win versus Geneseo in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

The Red Dragons won their 14th consecutive game, improving to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Knights fell to 11-3 and 5-3. The same two teams will meet in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday, May 6.

Sophomore Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) added five goals and an assist for Cortland. Junior Lindsay Abbott (Onondaga Central/South Onondaga) recorded two goals and three assists to become just the second Red Dragon to score 100 points in a season (46 goals, 56 assists, 102 points), joining Danielle Torre, who owns the school record of 108 points on 80 goals and 28 assists in 2009.

Sophomore Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored three goals, junior Erin Kollar (East Islip) contributed two goals and one assist and freshmen Alexis Egeberg (Black River/Carthage) and Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) each chipped in with one assist for Cortland.

Sophomore goalie Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) made four saves in 50 minutes, 48 seconds. Sophomore Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) played the final 9:12, stopping one shot.

Sophomore Lea Paris (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) and freshman Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) led the Knights with four goals apiece. Senior Anna Hutchings (Syracuse/Westhill) had two goals and an assist, sophomore Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield) and freshmen Meredith Weber (Bellport) and Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) each netted one goal and senior Lauren Burgoon (Syracuse/West Genesee) recorded two assists.

Senior goalie Annie Smith (Rochester Penfield) played the first 17 minutes of the first half and the entire second half, stopping three shots. Sophomore Julie Bernatzky (Mt. Sinai) played the final 13 minutes of the opening half and made two saves.

Cortland jumped out to a 6-1 lead less than 12 and a half minutes into the game as Di Fato and Hartzheim each connected twice. The Knights pulled to within 7-4 on two goals from Paris and one from Hutchings at the 9:30 mark, but the Red Dragons took the momentum into halftime by netting the last four goals of the half for an 11-4 lead. Di Fato scored twice and Abbott registered her 100th point of the season on a free-position goal 42 seconds before the break.

The second half proved to be a half of runs, as the teams took turns shifting the momentum. Geneseo opened the second stanza with two goals, but Cortland answered with a pair and led 13-6 at the 19:03 mark. The Knights responded with three straight scores from three different players to close the gap to 13-9 with 14:18 remaining.

Hartzheim and Cook pushed Cortland's lead to 15-9. Buonocore then followed with a pair of free-position goals and Petrone also scored from the free position to get the Knights within 15-12, their smallest margin since trailing 7-4 in the first half. The Red Dragons took control of the game by scoring the next three goals, one by Abbott and two from Cook, to lead 18-12 with 3:03 to play. Haggerty completed the scoring with a goal from the free position at 48 seconds.

The teams combined for 70 fouls, 41 turnovers and 12 free-position goals in the contest.
