Air Force Ends Season with Victory over Hobart

USAFA, Colo. Led by senior Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.), the Air Force lacrosse team picked up a 9-6 ECAC win over Hobart Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. Sandtorv, playing in his final game for the Falcons, tallied a game-high three goals.

Hobart scored the first goal of the game, with Cam Stone getting on the board at the 8:55 mark in the opening period. Air Force freshman Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) notched the equalizer more than six minutes later with an assist from Erik Smith (Fr., Golden, Colo.), while Sandtorv gave the Falcons the lead with a score in a 6-on-4 situation at the 1:12 mark.

Smith, assisted by classmate Kyle Cassady (Columbus, Ohio), found the back of the net in the opening minute of the second period, while the Statesmen responded with a man-up goal from Tim Bigelow to get back within two goals.

However, Air Force went on a 3-0 run, which included the first career goal from sophomore Alex Kauth (Dayton, Ohio). Hobart ended the Falcons' scoring spurt with a goal off a face-off win by Bobby Dattilo, but Scott Hewitson (Fr., Centennial, Colo.) added another Air Force goal to give the Falcons' a 7-3 advantage at the break.

The Statesmen put together a quick run to open the second half, getting a pair of unassisted scores from Tyler Smith in the first two minutes of the period, once again cutting the margin to two goals. However, Cassady scored a man-up goal on another 6-on-4 opportunity for the Falcons, giving Air Force the 8-5 advantage with 8:36 left in the third quarter. Still, Hobart was able to get back within two goals with a man-up score from Alex Love.

With a two-goal cushion going into the final period, Air Force pushed the margin back to three with another goal from Sandtorv, assisted by classmate Zack Carroll (Freehold Township, N.J.) with 10:52 to play. It proved to be the last score of the game, as both goalkeepers made several outstanding stops in the fourth quarter.

Hobart was dominant at the face-off X, with Dattilo winning 13 of 19 draws. The Statesmen also had a slight edge in shots and ground balls, but were unable to capitalize on extra-man opportunities in a penalty-heavy contest. Hobart was just 2 of 9 on the EMO, while Air Force scored on two of their six man-up opportunities.

Sandtorv (3g) and Cassady (1g, 2a) each registered three points for the Falcons, while senior goalkeeper Brian Wilson (Summit, N.J.) was credited with 10 stops. For the Statesmen, Love and Smith each tallied two goals and an assist to lead the offense, while goalie Jon Lawless tallied 12 saves.

The Falcons, who have won five of their last seven contests, end their season with a 6-7 overall record and 3-3 mark in the ECAC, tying for third in the conference. Meanwhile, the Statesmen end the year at 5-9 overall, 2-4 in the ECAC.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Hobart senior long-stick midfielder Alex Caton and junior midfielder Bobby Dattilo broke season records today, but the accomplishments were bittersweet as Air Force posted a 9-6 ECAC Lacrosse League victory. Caton broke his own record for caused turnovers in a season, while Dattilo eclipsed the Statesmen's Division I standards for faceoffs won and faceoff winning percentage in a season.

Caton came into the contest tied with sophomore defenseman Sean Regan for the team lead, one off Caton's 2010 record of 17 caused turnovers. He finished the day with two caused turnovers, as well as a game-high seven grounds balls. The all-time leader in CTO, Caton graduates with 43 career takeaways and 190 ground balls (6th on the all-time list).
