Colgate Falls One Goal Short to Navy in PL Final

HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/30/11) Colgate came up short in its bid for another Patriot League title as Navy defeated the Raiders, 15-14, with the Mids scoring the gamewinner in the final minute.

Colgate (9-7) got four goals and an assist from Courtney Miller, while Kate Bergstrom netted three scores and had a helper for four points. Colgate had seven different goal scorers in the game. Bubnack kept her goal-scoring streak alive with two goals and Katie Sullivan continued her great play in the tournament with two goals and an assist for three points. Christina Roa was spectacular in net and showed why she was the defensive player of the year as she made 10 saves with eight in the second half.

Navy (14-5) saw Jasmine DePompeo take over the game with five goals and four assists in the win, with all five scores coming in the second half. Kathy Young had three goals, while three others had two. Caitlin Mandrin Hill posted two goals and three helpers for five points. Michelle Verbeeck earned the win despite making just three stops.

The first 10 minutes of the game went Colgate's way as the Raiders built a 4-2 lead thanks to goals from Miller, Bubnack, Bergstrom and Kelly Mason. Navy got goals from Aimee Gennaro and Young. The Mids battled back with two-straight to tie the game at 4-4 at the 13:17 mark of the first half. Bubnack gave the Raiders the lead back just 11 seconds later after winning the draw control and breaking in all alone. Greer Goebels added to the lead with her lone goal of the day with an assist to Sullivan to make it 6-4 with 11:43 left.

The Midshipmen, once again, fought back to tie it at 6-6, but then Colgate opened the game up before the half. Amanda O'Sullivan started a streak of three-straight to end the half with her third goal of the tournament, while Bergstrom and Miller closed out the scoring in the first 30 minutes to send Colgate to the locker room with a 9-6 lead.

The lead ballooned to 11-6 when Miller and Bergstrom scored again to open the final frame and the Raiders had a streak of five-consecutive goals. Navy chipped away on their next two possessions with Young and DePompeo scoring to cut the lead to 11-8 with 21:18 remaining in the game. The teams then traded goals up until the 12:51 mark and with the score at 14-10 in favor of Colgate, DePompeo started a Navy streak of five goals. She had three of five scores and assisted on another and scored the game-tying goal at the 5:54 mark.

On the all important draw control with under five minutes left, the Mids were able to come up with the ball and they ran out most of the five minutes remaining. The Navy offense began to force it with under a minute left and Roa was able to make the first stop. However, the Mids picked up the ground ball and Katrina Nietsch scored with 28 seconds left to give Navy its second-straight Patriot League Title and became the third-consecutive repeat champion in the league. The lead was the first for the Mids since leading 2-1. Colgate had an opportunity after winning the draw, but a pair of turnovers by both teams ran out the clock.

Navy outshot the Raiders 31-22 on the day and had a 22-7 advantage in the second half. The Mids had 17 ground balls to Colgate's 14 and the Raiders outdueled Navy on draw controls by a 17-14 margin.

The Raiders finish the season with a 9-7 mark and made their sixth championship game since the tournament began in 2001. Colgate has a 4-2 mark in conference title games. Bubnack, Bergstrom and Missy Giusti played in their final game in a Colgate uniform and finished their careers with two Patriot League titles in four years and made the championship game three times.
