Mercy Rallies for Shootout Win at Lake Erie
Mercy rallied in the second half for a 17-11 win at Lake Erie on Saturday. The Mavericks used a 7-0 run, which was part of a larger 9-1 run, to seal the win. Mercy has now secured a winning record this season, at 8-6. Mercy has one game remaining in the regular season.
In the first half, teams literally traded goals in a tight affair, with the Storm (2-11; 0-5 ECC) taking the slim 8-7 lead at the break. In the second half, everything changed.
LEC built a 10-8 lead with just under 20 minutes to play, before the historic run took place. Six different players scored during the 7-0 run for Mercy, with freshman Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) scoring twice. That 7-0 run took a little over seven minutes of game time.
For the game, sophomore Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led all scorers with five goals and two assists, while classmate Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) added four goals. Znaniecki and fellow freshman Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) each had three.
For the hosts, Meredith Howe had five goals.
In goal, Mercy's Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made 14saves, while her LEC counterpart Brittanie Johnson made 13.
Mercy completes the regular season on Sunday, May 1, at Seton Hill University.
