Towson Erupts for Win vs. Saint Joseph's in Finale

TOWSON, Md. One of nine seniors playing in his final college game, midfielder Peter Mezzanotte (West Islip H.S./West Islip, N.Y.) scored two goals with two assists and set a single game record with eight caused turnovers as Towson (3-10, 1-5) concluded its season with a 15-2 CAA victory over Saint Joseph's (0-12, 0-6) at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Tigers, who scored a season-high 15 goals, dominated the Hawks for the entire contest and finished the game with a 46-27 advantage in shots.

Mezzanotte, who finished his career with a school-record 95 caused turnovers, enjoyed the first two-goal game of his career. With 95 caused turnovers, he broke the school record of 92, which was established by Ted Turnblacer (2003-06).

In his final college game, he also broke Turnblacer's mark of six caused turnovers, a record he set against Air Force in 2005.

"The kids played well tonight," said Towson Coach Tony Seaman. "They could have given up but they didn't. I'm very proud of them. It has been an unbelievably heart-breaking year for us. We have a great nucleus coming back and this was a great start towards the 2012 season."

The Tigers, who snapped a six-game losing streak with the win, had suffered five losses by one-goal margins, including CAA losses to Delaware (8-7), Massachusetts (9-8) and Penn State (7-6).

Although the Tigers dominated play in the early going, the game was scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. The Tigers finally broke the scoreless deadlock when Mezzanotte picked up a loose ball and scored an unassisted goal on a behind-the-back shot with 5:56 left in the first quarter. With 4:13 left in the first quarter, sophomore Matt Hughes (Central Bucks East H.S./Doylestown, Pa.) added an unassisted goal, his 17th of the season.

With 1:56 left in the first quarter, Hughes scored off a pass from Mezzanotte, extending the lead to 3-0.

The first quarter ended with the Tigers owning a 14-1 advantage in shots and a three-goal lead.

Early in the second quarter, senior Tim Stratton (Manheim Township H.S./Lititz, Pa.) tallied his eighth goal of the year off a pass from Hughes to make it 4-0. Less than two minutes later, junior Matt Lamon (St. Mary's H.S./Annapolis, Md.) scored off an assist from Stratton as the Tigers' lead improved to 5-0.

Midway through the second period, St. Joseph's took advantage of an extra man situation to get on the scoreboard. After Mezzanotte was penalized for holding, sophomore Ian Correia (St. Joseph's Prep/Devon, Pa.) scored off a pass from sophomore Kyle Williams (Marriotts Ridge H.S./Marriottsville, Md.).

Mezzanotte atoned for his penalty with 4:38 remaining in the half when he scored his second goal of the game off a pass from junior Sean Maguire (Calvert Hall College H.S./Lutherville, Md.).

Leading by 6-1 at halftime, the Tigers added to their lead in the third quarter.

Early in the third period, senior Elliott Domanic (Foothill H.S./Santa Ana, Calif.) scored an unassisted goal, his second of the season, to give the Tigers a 7-1 advantage. With 10:53 left in the third period, Lamon scored his second goal of the game with an assist from Stratton.

An unassisted goal by freshman Andrew Hodgson (West Islip H.S./West Islip, N.Y.) gave the Tigers a 9-1 lead with 9:45 remaining in the third quarter.

With 1:34 remaining in the third quarter, junior Stephen Norris (Leonardtown H.S./Compton, Md.) contributed an unassisted goal to make it a 10-1 lead. Just 37 seconds later, Hodgson scored an extra man goal off a pass from Maguire.
