Guiford Drops ODAC Quarterfinal at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH Natalie Belva and Tara Harding both scored four goals in Virginia Wesleyan College's 18-7 victory over Guilford College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinal Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Marlins (10-7) advance to a semifinal matchup Wednesday (5/3) at top-seeded Washington and Lee University. The loss ends the fifth-seeded Quakers' season with a 6-11 overall record.

Summer Frazier scored the second of her team-high three goals with 7:54 left before halftime to bring Guilford within 7-6. Virginia Wesleyan answered with three straight scores to end the half with a 10-6 lead and put the game away with a 7-0 run to start the second half.

The Marlins enjoyed a commanding 9-1 edge in draw controls in the second half, which effectively kept the ball away from the Quakers. Belva tallied twice and had both of her assists during the decisive 10-0 spurt that spanned the two halves. Courtney Williams scored each of her three goals during the run. Belva picked up six draw controls and seven ground balls for the Marlins, both game highs. Harding had four draws and four ground balls.

Frazier's three goals paced the Quakers, who were outshot 20-4 in the second half and 40-21 for the game. E'leyna Garcia scored once and had a game-high three assists. Goalie Liza Mettler made 10 saves and picked up a club-high six ground balls.
