Cobleskill Closes Reg. Season with Win at Johnson State

SUNY Cobleskill closed out the regular season on Sunday afternoon traveling to Johnson, Vt. to defeat the Badgers of Johnson State by a 14-4 margin in non-league play at Johnson's Minaert Field. With the victory the Fighting Tigers head into the post-season with a 7-8 overall mark while the Badgers are 1-9 overall campaign with one game remaining to play.

After the home team scored the game's opening goal only six seconds into the action, Cobleskill came roaring back to score nine times in the first half to take a 9-2 lead into the break, from which they never looked back. The Orange & Black dominated the action throughout the contest outshooting their hosts 52-23 on the day while holding a 55-34 margin in groundballs.

Once again sophomore attackman Peter Gonzalez, West Islip, N.Y., West Islip, led the assault offensively as the reigning Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Offensive Player of the-Week struck for four goals and four assists in the win while the duo of freshman attackman Kevin Whitcomb Baldwinsville, N.Y., Baldwinsville, and junior midfielder Jeff Fitchner, Rochester, N.Y., Gates-Chili/Finger Lakes Community College, each struck for two goals and two assists.

Junior midfielder Brian Murphy, Cross River, N.Y., John Jay, chipped in two goals on the day with the quartet of: sophomore attackman Steve Hughes, Wallkill, N.Y., Wallkill, senior defender Alex Triani, Bayport, N.Y., Bayport Blue Point, freshman midfielder Josh France, Minisink Valley, N.Y., Minisink Valley, and junior attackman Kyle Carroccio, Copiague, N.Y., Copiague, each adding a goal to the victory totals.

Defensively senior midfielder Alex Bendon, Latham, N.Y., Shaker/Hudson Valley Community College, was a major factor with 14 groundballs in the contest as was fellow senior Corey Tizzo, Franklin Square, N.Y., St. Mary's, who won all nine of his face-off attempts to go with three groundballs.

Between the pipes senior goalie Tom Knezick, Columbus, N.J., Northern Burlington, recorded nine saves and had a groundball in the win.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Wednesday May 4th when they travel to Keuka Park, N.Y. to meet Keuka College in the Semifinals of the 2011 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament beginning at 4:00 p.m. The number three seeded Fighting Tigers, 7-8/4-2 NEAC, will meet the second seeded Storm, 8-5/5-1 NEAC, looking to avenge an 11-4 regular season road loss to the Storm on April 2nd.
