St. Thomas More Claims Second Straight Title in Louisiana

Behind a balanced attack and rock-solid defense, Saint Thomas More (13-2) cruised to its second consecutive boys' lacrosse state championship thanks to a 17-4 win over Brother Martin on Sunday at Cougar Stadium in Lafayette. Tournament Offensive MVP Saban Sellers led the way for the Cougars with three goals and two assists while teammate Hunter Stinson added four goals.

Last season, Saint Thomas More finished the season with an eight-game winning streak and posted a 10-8 win over Jesuit-New Orleans in the pinnacle contest.

As for '11, the Cougars also won their final eight games of the season and defeated their opponents in convincing fashion. The squad posted double-digit goals in each of its eight victories and held opponents to an average of 4.8 goals per game. To reach the finals, the Cougars defeated Jesuit-New Orleans 11-3 and avenged an earlier season loss to the Bluejays on January 22.

Saint Thomas More's deep roster proved to be overwhelming for opponents down the stretch. While midfielders Ashton Langlinais and David Escott were effective on both ends of the field, goaltender Andrew Broussard was also a force between the pipes.

As for Brother Martin, the squad finishes 7-8 overall despite impressive wins over St. Paul's School and Byrd to reach the state title game.

Heavyweights Prevail in Texas Super Regionals

Regional and quarterfinal action produced some electric games this weekend in the Texas Super Regionals Division I boys' lacrosse tournament. And while there were no major upsets to speak of, high-quality lacrosse proved to be the trend on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, Dallas Jesuit crushed Anderson, 16-5, while Episcopal Dallas defeated Houston Christian, 16-5.

On Sunday, quarterfinal play witnessed some top-tier teams squaring off for a spot in the state semifinals this weekend. In the first game of the day, Episcopal Dallas took down top-seed Austin, 8-4, behind a shutdown defense. With the win, Episcopal also avenged an early season loss to Austin back on February 26, 9-8, in overtime. All the while, Dallas Jesuit claimed an 11-9 victory over Kingwood. The Rangers have now won nine-straight games heading into semifinal action.
