Warriors' Season Ends in Heartbreaker at FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. Lycoming jumped out to a five-goal lead early in Monday's Middle Atlantic Conference first-round game, but FDU-Florham stormed back, with Adam Koontz scoring from the top of the wing with 0.4 seconds left to take an 8-7 decision at Shields Field.

The Devils (11-6 overall) advance to the semifinals of the MAC Championship, as they will face No. 2 seed Messiah on Wednesday, May 4.

Senior J.B. Campanella (Lansdale, Pa./LaSalle) stopped a 5-1 run by the Devils early in the fourth quarter as he got the ball near midfield and ran the right sideline before curling in and depositing a shot past the FDU keeper just outside the crease to give the Warriors a two-goal lead.

The Devils answered back with 9:12 remaining, though, as Paul Colflesh caused a turnover in the backfield and ran the length of the field for a score. With 2:37 left, Colflesh struck again from the wing, tying the score at seven and setting up Koontz's game-winner.

In the second quarter, sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) found freshman Bryce Apple (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) for a tally. However, the Devils fought back into the game with a pair of goals in the next five minutes. A minute before halftime, though, the Warriors stopped the Devils' momentum as Apple returned the favor, finding Romano at the wing and Romano fired into the upper right corner to make it 6-2.

The Devils struck again in the third quarter to make it 6-3 as Colflesh connected from the right side and after the Warriors killed a two-man advantage for FDU-Florham, Cody McHugh scored twice late in the quarter to make it a one-goal game.
