Western Connecticut Eliminates Southern Maine in LEC

DANBURY, Conn. -- Fourth-seeded Western Connecticut jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three minutes of play and never looked back en route to posting a 10-3 victory over fifth-seeded Southern Maine Tuesday evening in a first-round playoff of the 2011 Little East Conference tournament.

The Colonials improve to 10-6 and will face top-seeded Keene State College in a semifinal game on Thursday (3:30 p.m.). The Huskies conclude their season 5-11.

Junior Sean Macey (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the WestConn attack with four goals and one assist. Freshman Ryan Foster (Ledyard, Conn.) scored twice for the Colonials, followed by junior Ryan Gillis (Norwich, Conn.), sophomore John Miller (Seattle, Wash.), senior Chris Frappier (Watertown, Conn.), and junior Ross Manweiler (New Milford, Conn.) who each scored once.

For Southern Maine, sophomore Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) scored two unassisted goals, and freshman Dylan Bousquet-Smith (Bowdoinham, Maine) scored in the game's final minute.

WestConn exploded out of the gate scoring four goals in the game's first two-and-a-half minutes, with Macey scoring two and assisting on another. Southern Maine finally broke through the WestConn defense when White took a hard, low shot from 20 yards out that travelled across the turf and just slipped by Martone's outstretched foot. More than 40 minutes would pass until the next Southern Maine goal was scored, and WestConn closed out the first quarter with a 5-1 lead.

Western Connecticut junior goalie Tyler Martone (Cheshire, Conn.) finished with 11 saves to earn the victory, while sophomore Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) recorded 13 saves in a losing effort for Southern Maine.
