No. 3 Limestone Knocked off by No. 9 Rollins

GAFFNEY, S.C. A second-half dominance of the draw controls and a tremendous defensive effort by No. 9 Rollins (13-4) handed No. 3 Limestone (17-1, 7-0 CC) their first loss of the season, 13-9, on Saturday, May 7. It was the regular season finale for Limestone, which will now await word on seeding, and a potential bye, for the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

Holding a narrow 6-5 lead at the half, Limestone junior attack Racquel Prager (Seaford, N.Y.) delivered a goal at the 28:52 mark to stretch the lead to two at 7-5. Back-to-back goals by the Tars' Marissa Giannerini and Sophie Townsend over the next three minutes then knotted the score at 7-7 with 25:57 to play. The score would stay that way over the eight and a half minutes before Cat Kelley connected with Sarah Ann Showell for the go-ahead goal, 8-7, at the 17:16 mark.

That lead would not last long as Prager found the back of the net with 14:45 to play, once again tying the score, this time at 8-8. Less than a minute later, Rollins' Erica Pagliarulo took it herself and delivered her only goal of the game to put the Tars back on top at 9-8. A Limestone yellow card that coincided with that goal then set the tone for the remainder of the game as Sophie Townsend capitalized only seconds later and made it 10-8 with 13:34 to play.

Playing down a man, the Saints rallied to pull to within 10-9 behind an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Chelsea Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.). That would be it offensively, however, as Rollins locked down defensively and added three more goals over the final 12 minutes to secure the 13-9 victory.

In the first half, the Tars came out strong as they notched the first goal of the game and took a 3-1 lead by the 26:10 mark. Limestone then used a 5-1 run, fueled by goals from freshman attack Sarah Oor (Uxbridge, Canada), freshman midfielder Jessica Aguanno (Delray Beach, Fla.), sophomore midfielder Brittany Howard (Oswego, N.Y.), Prager and freshman midfielder Katie Farrell (Brooks, Ga.) to take a 6-4 lead. Sophie Townsend would notch a goal at the 3:20 mark to send the game to the half at 6-5, Limestone.

Sophie Townsend led Rollins with a game-high four goals, five ground balls and three draw controls while Sarah Ann Showell, Katy Tyszko and Marissa Giannerini each had a pair of scores. Caroline Lamere, Ginevera Czech and Erica Pagliarulo rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Tyszko, Showell and Cat Kelley each had an assist for the Tars. Elyse De Lisle played all 60 minutes in goal, along nine scores and making nine saves, to get the win and improve to 12-4 on the season.

Racquel Prager scored three goals and added an assist to lead Limestone while Brittany Howard and senior attack Casey Wilcox (Liverpool, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist. Jessica Aguanno, Sarah Oor, Katie Farrell and Chelsea Treat each had solo scores. Sophomore goalkeeper Rashelle McLellan (East Lyme, Conn.) led the team with four ground balls and suffered her first loss of the season as she surrendered a season-high 13 goals while making seven saves.

As a unit, Rollins posted a 14-9 advantage in draw controls with an 8-3 mark in decisive second half.

Limestone has concluded the regular season and will now await word on seeding for the 2011 NCAA Division II Tournament. The selection show will air at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 and will be carried live on
