Chaparral Upends Brophy Prep for Arizona Boys' Title

After failing to reach the state finals last season for the first time in program history, the Chaparral boys' lacrosse team got back to its winning ways in 2011.

Behind a blue-collar work ethic, smothering defense and highly-efficient offense, Chaparral defeated top seed Brophy Prep, 10-9, on Saturday to win the Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I boys' lacrosse championship. Midfielder Tommy Driver led the way for the Firebirds with five goals and an assist, while attack Ryan Erickson and teammate Finn Wells combined for two goals and three assists.

The victory for Chaparral (17-2 overall) avenged an 11-4 loss on March 18 to Brophy Prep, in addition to a 9-4 defeat to the Broncos during last season's semifinals. As for Brophy Prep (19-4), the title game result was the team's only in-state defeat of the entire season.

"We really executed our gameplan," Chaparral head coach P.J. Rovinelli said. "The first time against Brophy, we weren't at full strength. But this time, we were quite confident going in. The guys were hungry, disciplined and a better team overall compared to earlier this season."

An inspired Chaparral squad stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter thanks in part to dominance at the face-off X and a shutdown defense led by defenders Zach Hoover and Mitchell McKelvey, plus goalie Alex Larson. And while Brophy Prep kept within one or two goals most of the game, Chaparral was able to keep its rival at bay for the entire contest and never relinquished its lead.

"Brophy Prep is an unbelievable team," Rovinelli said. "They are a better team than us based on pure lacrosse talent. But I think what we do differently is the stuff in between the lines. I think we do those things harder than anybody else. We weren't necessarily the best team in Arizona, but we did everything else harder."

In semifinal play on Wednesday, Chaparral defeated Mesa, 9-3, behind a 6-0 second half run. The squads were tied at 3-3 at halftime before the Firebirds implemented some key adjustments in the second half to spark the semifinal victory. Mesa had been riding high following a 7-6 upset win over Desert Vista.

Meanwhile, Brophy Prep edged a tough Saguaro squad, 8-6, in semifinal action on Wednesday to notch its sixth consecutive state championship appearance.

Notre Dame Prep Takes Division II Championship in OT Thriller

Top seed Notre Dame Prep claimed the '11 Division II title on Saturday thanks to a thrilling 12-11 OT victory against Oro Valley.

With a comfortable four-goal lead late in the contest, it appeared that Notre Dame would waltz to the title. However, Oro Valley staged an impressive rally to tie the game at 11-11 with just seconds remaining in regulation. While the Wolverines had opportunities to net the game-winner late in the fourth quarter and early in the first overtime session, it was Notre Dame Prep that eventually sealed the victory with a clutch goal coming midway through the extra period.

The Saints finished the season at 13-3 overall and won their final nine games of the campaign.
