Georgia Lacrosse Championship Preview

A total of eight teams are set to face-off for the ultimate prize this weekend in the Georgia High School Association Lacrosse Championships. On the boys' side, it's Harrison against Walton in the AAAAA title game and then Pope versus Lambert in the A-AAAA showdown. In the girls' division, Roswell goes for the upset over perennial power Milton in AAAAA action, plus Westminster looks to notch back-to-back titles in Class A-AAAA.

GHSA Class AAAAA Boys' Championship: Harrison vs. Walton Saturday, May 14

LaxPower's No. 2 and No. 3-ranked teams in Georgia square off for the AAAAA Championship on Saturday in what shapes up to be an evenly-matched finale.

Harrison (15-3) is riding high following a thrilling double-overtime victory over defending champion Milton in the semifinals on Wednesday. Midfielder Daniel O'Meara scored two minutes into the second overtime session to send his team to the state finals for the second time in three seasons.

The Hoyas will look toward goalie Reid Bass for another standout performance. In Wednesday's semifinal, Bass made 16 saves including several close-range stops during the overtime periods to secure his team's win over Milton. Bass and company were outshot by Milton 39-24 overall in the contest. Also, expect All-American midfielder Justin Evans and standout attackman Nick Green to be difference-makers offensively for the Hoyas.

Walton (17-3) also enters the championship feeling confident following Wednesday's 7-6 semifinal win over Northview. Walton's Tyler Poole scored the game winner with 14.7 seconds left on a sensational behind-the-back shot. Against Harrison, the Raiders will look to impose its powerful offense headed by All-State selections Ned Kaish (attack) and Matt Morabito (midfield). Meanwhile, if defender Jack Chase and goalie Michael Harper can apply constant pressure against Evans, Green and the rest of the Hoya offense, the Raiders could be in good shape to secure the '11 title.

These teams should be quite familiar with each other considering they recently played on April 28. In that contest, Harrison escaped with a 9-8 victory in a nail-biter. With both teams boasting deep lineups and playmakers all over the field, expect Saturday's title game to be close from start to finish.

GHSA Class A-AAAA Boys' Championship: Pope vs. Lambert Friday, May 13

Two red-hot Georgia powers battle for the Class A-AAAA championship on Saturday when Pope takes on Lambert.

Lambert (20-1) has steamrolled its competition so far in three postseason games and now looks to make a tough Pope squad into its next victim this weekend. The Longhorns have outscored their playoff opponents 42-6, which includes a 13-1 semifinal victory over Westminster on Tuesday.

Behind a well-rounded offense and aggressive defense, Lambert has found a recipe for success in '11. The Longhorns have won 19-straight games heading into Saturday's title contest, which include wins over recent Texas state champion Coppell, Highland Park (TX), Providence HS (NC) and McCallie (TN). The Lambert offense goes through All-American attacks Adam Seal and Connor Butz, plus supporting players Cory Phillips and Zack Price. Defenders Loren Bailey, Braxton Roman and Colin Massa round out one of the region's most balanced rosters, which has limited 14 opponents to five goals or less this season.
