Coast Guard Academy Wins Battle of the Bears

New London, Conn. - The United States Coast Guard Academy earned their fifth straight conference victory with a strong performance against rival Bridgewater State. Under the bright lights of Cadet Memorial Field, a lively crowd cheered Coast Guard on, as nine different players scored in the 20-6 win.

The game started off in Coast Guard's favor as they won the opening face-off. 3/c Austin English (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) scored the first goal of the night and led the game in points with three goals and six assists. English's first assist soon followed on a pass to 4/c Stuart Carley (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) that put Coast Guard up 2-0. Carley stayed hot and scored the very next goal with an assist from senior co-captain, 1/c Matt Chase (Baltimore, Md./Lochraven).

Coast Guard continued their scoring streak with a goal by 2/c Devin Quinn (Voluntown, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) on another assist from Chase. Coast Guard would outshoot Bridgewater 18-6 in the first quarter and score two more goals by Chase and one by 2/c Daniel Symansky (Vienna Va./Madison) to finish the quarter up 7-0.

The second quarter opened with more scoring from Coast Guard as English snuck through the defense and put one past Bridgewater's goalie. After two Coast Guard penalties, Bridgewater scored their first goal of the game to make it 8-1. Coast Guard would not be deterred however, and English would set up the next two goals with assists to Chase and 4/c Eric (EJ) Schmid (Robbinsville NJ./Robbinsville). Schmid scored again just minutes later on another assist from English and immediately after 1/c Kyle Ennis (Mayo, Md./Dematha) scored his first goal of the game with an outside rocket into the net. Ennis remained at the center of the action, setting up a goal to English and scoring again to close the half 14-1 with a sensational shot through the goalie's legs.

Coast Guard continued their assault in the third quarter behind the strong play of their midfield lines. 2/c Nicholas Zablotny (Annapolis Md./Broadneck) began the half with a quick goal to push Coast Guard to a 15-1 lead. Symansky kept Coast Guard in possession of the ball with stellar play at the face-off "X", winning 11 of 14 draws throughout the game and scooping up five ground balls. Freshman standouts Schmid and Carley would score the next two goals as each player recorded a hat-trick for the game. Ennis added another goal for Coast Guard, but Bridgewater answered with one of their own to end the quarter at 18-2.

The last quarter swung in favor of Bridgewater as they outscored Coast Guard 4-2. However, it was too little, too late as 3/c James Lord (Simsbury Ct./Westminster) scored early in the quarter, and Ennis topped it off with Coast Guard's 20th goal. Ennis showed his versatility this evening, producing four goals, one assist and equaling 2/c Andrew Breen's (Falls Church Va./George Mason) effort by collecting a team-high 7 ground balls.

Coast Guard will face off next against the Stonehill College Skyhawks in another Friday night game at Cadet Memorial Field on April 8th at 8:00 PM.
