#5 Davenport Tops #12 Utah Valley in MCLA D2

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. Shawn Beer recorded eight goals and four assists to tie the tournament record for points as the senior led the No. 5 Panthers to a 23-9 win over No. 12 Utah Valley. The win advances DU to the MCLA D2 Quarterfinals on Wednesday, when they will take on No. 4 Briarcliffe at 1:00 (MT).

Davenport, making its third straight appearance at the MCLA D2 National Tournament, advanced to quarterfinals with a convincing win over the Wolverines on Tuesday afternoon. DU will take on Briarcliffe on Wednesday, who they were defeated by earlier this season, for the right to play in the Final Four on Friday.

First team All-CCLA performer Cody Cross got the scoring started just 2:07 into the first quarter and Davenport poured in three more in the opening 15 minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Also scoring for DU were Gavin Morris and Shawn Beer with a pair.

Utah Valley, last year's national runner-up, came back strong with back to back goals to open the second quarter and the two teams matched each other with five goals each in the second quarter. Taylor Keyworth's goal with 12:09 to play in the half was the start of five new scorers for DU as Davenport went into the locker room with a 9-5 lead.

Shawn Beer then took over in the second half as the MCLA All-American finished with a tournament tying points mark of 12 (8 goals and 4 assists).

Eight different players scored for Davenport as they outscored the Wolverines 14-4 in the second half.

Zach Higgins, the CCLA Defensive Player of the Year, finished with the win in net as the junior recorded nine saves. Zach improves to 6-1 on the year.

Davenport (15-5) will take on Briarcliffe (Pa.) in the MCLA quarterfinals on Wednesday at 3:00 EST. Davenport was defeated by BC earlier this year as they dropped a 10-7 decision back on March 27. Live stats and live audio will be available for the game.
