#2 Limestone Upended by #5 Adelphi in Semis

GAFFNEY, S.C. No. 5 Adelphi scored five goals over a 5:41 stretch of the third quarter, including sophomore midfielder Kevin Kennedy's (Massapequa, N.Y.) unassisted goal at the 7:51 mark breaking a 6-6 tie, as the Panthers defeated No. 2 Limestone (15-2) 14-11 in the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Men's Division II Lacrosse Championships at "The Rock" on Saturday, May 21.

Adelphi (16-2) advances to the title game where it will face No.4 Mercyhurst on Sunday, May 29 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. The Lakers earlier Saturday won at No.1 and two-time defending national champion C.W. Post, 14-4.

Limestone, which led 5-3 at the intermission, pushed the advantage to three on senior midfielder Thomas Langan's (Potomac, Md.) unassisted score 1:45 into the third period. However, Adelphi junior attack Joe Vitale (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored consecutive unassisted goals over the next 43 seconds to pull the Panthers within 6-5 before sophomore midfielder/attack Michael Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y.) deposited a feed from junior midfielder Shane Wynn (Oceanside, N.Y.) for a man-up tally to tie the game at 6-6 with 8:35 left in the period that before Kennedy's eventual game winner :30 seconds later.

Wynn added an unassisted goal early in the fourth period pushing the Panthers advantage to 9-6 with 13:27 to play. However, Limestone struck just over two minutes later getting unassisted goals from junior attack Shayne Jackson (Bomanville, Ontario) and junior midfielder Desi Gonzalez (Massapequa, N.Y.) over a seven-second stretch to pull within one goal with 11:18 left at 9-8. But Adelphi would push back to a two goal advantage :19 seconds later as junior attack Danny Blau (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored a goal at the 9:46 mark of the fourth on an assist from freshman midfielder Kevin Fundus (Massapaequa, N.Y.) pushing the margin to 10-8, with Limestone never getting closer.

Vitale and Blau each finished with three goals while Rossi, Wynn-who added an assist and freshman midfielder Kieran Riegel (Bethpage, N.Y.) had two goals each.

In goal, Adelphi junior keeper Eric Janssen (Hicksville, N.Y.) stopped 15 of Limestone's shots 26 shots on goal and also assisted on the Panthers final goal of the contest.

Langan led Limestone with six points on five goals and one assist while Gonzalez added a pair of goals. Junior midfielder Jackson Decker (Port Moody, British Columbia) had two points on a goal and assist. Junior defenseman Brian Hogan (West Islip, N.Y.) and fellow defender Ken Kerr (Potomac, Md.), a senior, scored a goal as did Jackson.

Limestone, which was making its 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship field while hosting a game for the first time since 2004, finishes the 2011 season with a program record tying 15 wins.
