Torrey Pines, Coronado Win Calif. Girls' and Boys' Titles

Torrey Pines and Coronado both earned clean sweeps this weekend in the CIF San Diego Section Lacrosse Championships. The 2011 campaign marked the first time that the San Diego Section split into two divisions for both girls' and boys' lacrosse.

In boys' action, Torrey Pines took the Division I crown thanks to a 10-7 victory over Poway on Saturday. After a back-and-forth affair for more than two quarters, Torrey Pines took its game to another level in the second half.

With the score iced at 6-6, the Falcons held Poway to just one goal over the final 21 minutes of action by dominating the time of possession and mixing up their defensive schemes. With the Torrey Pines offense doing its part, the Falcons earned a comfortable lead late in the game and held on for the championship victory.

Juniors Andrew Perkins and Sean Doyle each scored three goals for Torrey Pines. Goalie Bryce Cady added seven saves and sophomore Lucas Gradinger dished out four assists. With the win, the Falcons also avenged an earlier season loss to Poway on April 22 by the score of 9-7.

Torrey Pines (18-5) was riding high heading into Saturday's finale after downing top seed La Costa Canyon in the semifinals, 11-5. La Costa Canyon entered that semifinal game ranked as the No. 1 team in California according to LaxPower. The result also marked Torrey Pines' first win over the Mavericks since 2007.

Senior Chris Verne led the way for Poway with three goals and teammate Matt Landon added two. Senior goalie Derek Scozzafava stopped 12 shots between the pipes. Saturday's championship appearance was the first for Poway since '06. The Titans beat Rancho Bernardo, 6-5 in OT, in a semifinal thriller last Wednesday.

Boys' San Diego Section Division II Championship

In the Div. II title game, Coronado dispatched Cathedral Catholic, 15-7, to take the championship. Cathedral Catholic was in command early and took a 2-0 lead before Coronado embarked on a scoring blitz. After going down by two goals, Coronado scored seven of the next eight overall goals to take a 7-3 lead into intermission.

Cathedral Catholic trimmed its deficit to 10-7 early in the fourth quarter before Coronado tallied five consecutive goals to seal the victory. The win for the Islanders marked the team's third victory of the season over the Dons (17-5) in as many attempts.

Sophomore Jack Perkins led the way for Coronado (19-4) with five goals and three assists, while senior Alex Bookout added three goals and five assists. Goalie Reis Stanley also made 13 saves in the win for Coronado.

Girls' San Diego Section Division I Championship

As for the girls' division, top seed Torrey Pines took the Division I lacrosse championship behind an 18-5 victory over Rancho Bernardo. The win marked the second-straight San Diego Section title for Torrey Pines and an end to Rancho Bernardo's 20-game winning streak.
