California North Coast Championships on Friday

A slew of the Western Region's top lacrosse teams battle for the ultimate prize on Friday as the California (CIF) North Coast Section Championships are set for both girls' and boys' lacrosse. A total of four champions will be crowned across two separate divisions as headlining teams like De LaSalle and Carondelet face off for the 2011 title.

Boys' North Coast Section Division I Championship

In boys' Division I action, top seed De LaSalle goes up against Monte Vista-Danville for the championship. Opening face-off on Friday is scheduled for 7:30 PM at Dublin High just outside of Oakland.

Friday's showdown shapes up to be quite intriguing for a number of reasons. First, the game is a rematch of the 2009 NCS championship, which witnessed De LaSalle come away with a 12-7 victory. Also, these teams are evenly matched and quite familiar with each other having faced off twice during the regular season. Each team earned a win during the season series, with Monte Vista most recently posting a 16-8 victory on May 4.

As for De LaSalle (20-3), the squad brings a six-game winning streak into the finale, which includes a pair of wins over Foothill. So far in the NCS playoffs, the Spartans have had no trouble getting past its competition. The team first posted a 14-4 win over Dublin on May 17, then produced a 15-2 result against Las Lomas, and then followed up with a 14-8 win against Foothill. Expect the Spartans to rely on their strong defense to set the tone on Friday night. Senior defender Connor Hunt (Cornell) and defender/LSM Eric McCosker have been key reasons why De LaSalle has limited 15 of 23 opponents to five goals or less.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Monte Vista is poised to take the championship following its thrilling 9-8 semifinal win over a talented San Ramon Valley squad on Wednesday. The Mustangs ride a 10-game winning streak into Friday's match-up after starting the season at 7-6 overall. Expect the Mustangs to put the ball into the hands of dynamic attackman Casey Hock. The Queens recruit has a knack for getting to the goal and most recently put forth one of his top all-around performances of the season behind a six-goal, one-assist effort versus San Ramon Valley.

With each team registering a victory during the regular season, this title contest shapes up to be quite unpredictable yet exciting.

Boys' California North Coast Division II Championship

In NCS Division II action, Acalanes takes on Marin Catholic for the championship starting at 7 PM Friday in Lafayette.

Top seed Acalanes ranked No. 14 overall in California by LaxPower out of 185 teams --- is coming off an impressive 8-6 victory over Marin Academy (14-4) in semifinal action. The win proved to be payback for Acalanes after the team fell to Marin Academy back on March 11, 10-9. The Gamecocks have also posted some noteworthy wins this season, including results over Berkeley, Miramonte (twice) and Granite Bay.

No. 2 Marin Catholic enters Friday's battle after beating Miramonte, 10-6, on Wednesday in the semifinals. The Wildcats put together one of their strongest defensive games of the season by holding a typically potent Miramonte offense scoreless for more than 15 minutes of the game. Chris Hill has emerged as a go-to scorer offensively for the Wildcats (15-4), with teammates Jack Newman, Kyle White and Patrick Rooney stepping up as key support.
