State Champs Crowned in Oregon, Rhode Island

State champions were crowned from coast to coast this weekend in high school boys' lacrosse action. Starting in Oregon, Lincoln earned its third title in four years thanks to an impressive second-half comeback. Meanwhile, three different teams took home hardware in Rhode Island this weekend, including a considerable underdog and first-time champion.

Oregon: Lincoln Scores 13 Second-Half Goals En Route to 2011 Boys' Title

Despite facing a deficit for most of the first half, the Lincoln boys' lacrosse team dominated second-half action en route to an 18-10 win over Sunset for the '11 Oregon High School Lacrosse Association championship. After trailing by a goal at halftime, Lincoln outscored Sunset 8-1 in the third quarter and 13-4 overall in the second half to cap the come-from-behind victory.

The victory marked Lincoln's third state title in the last four years. The contest was also a rematch of the '10 championship, which saw Lincoln come away with a thrilling double-overtime win.

As for Saturday, the first half of action belonged to Sunset, which opened up a 3-0 lead before holding on to a 6-5 edge at intermission. However, everything came together for Lincoln in the third quarter. With standout attackmen Michael Marcott and Grant Clifford leading the charge, Lincoln was able to find holes in the Sunset defense and keep applying steady pressure for the remainder of the game. The duo combined for 10 goals on the day and simply could not be contained in the second half.

Lincoln grabbed a comfortable 13-7 advantage heading into the fourth before coasting to the title victory. Chris Nye and Jake Marcy also chipped in with three goals apiece, while teammate Tony Baum added two more scores.

The Cardinals (22-2 overall) went undefeated against in-state competition this year, only falling to tough Washington foes Mercer Island and Bellevue in late March. Lincoln posted a number of impressive victories throughout the campaign, including match-ups with Centennial (NV), Monte Vista-Danville (CA), Foothill (CA), Lakeridge (OR) and Oregon Episcopal.

Cole Abdie led the way for Sunset (17-7) with three goals and teammate Steven Lutz added two scores.

Rhode Island: Bishop Hendricken Upsets LaSalle to Take Division I Title

After already suffering two different regular season defeats to LaSalle Academy this season, both by ten goals, Bishop Hendricken was widely considered a long shot to come away with the title on Sunday night.

However, by slowing down the pace of play, relying on an effective, containing zone defense, and benefiting from a four-goal second half burst, the Bishop Hendricken boys' lacrosse team claimed the '11 Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I lacrosse championship with a 6-4 win over LaSalle Academy.

The championship was Bishop Hendricken's fifth overall and first since '07.

Early on, it appeared that LaSalle was well on its way to the title. The Rams stormed out to a 3-1 lead and held on to that same advantage heading into the halftime break. But the Hawks went on scoring blitz in the third quarter, scoring four goals in seven minutes to take a two-score advantage and fuel their shocking victory.
