Drew Pannell Named Head Coach at Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. -- Drew Pannell has joined the Reinhardt University athletic department as its new head men's lacrosse coach. He is responsible for directing all aspects of Reinhardt's intercollegiate men's lacrosse program, which currently competes as a member of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association and Southeastern Lacrosse Conference. Pannell replaces former head coach Binz Hansen, who resigned from the position in April.

"We are proud to have Coach Pannell on board to continue the growth of our 2-year-old men's lacrosse program," Reinhardt athletic director Bill Popp said. "He inherits a team of young but experienced players who are looking for his direction to take the next step in competitiveness.

"Coach Pannell offers many years of experience as well as a wealth of contacts in the world of lacrosse. We are fortunate that he was available and able to begin right away as recruiting will be his No. 1 priority as we approach the fall semester."

Pannell has a long history in lacrosse, as both a coach and player. In July 2007, he was one of the founders of the International Diversity Lacrosse Council and currently serves as vice president. Pannell held assistant coach positions at Collegiate School in New York City in 2009-10, NCAA Division II Bellarmine University in the fall of 2009, NCAA Division I University of Detroit (Mich.) Mercy in 2008-09, NCAA Division II Dominican College in 2007-08 and Hempstead (N.Y.) High School from 2005-08.

He began playing lacrosse at age 6 and went on to lead Manhasset (N.Y.) High School to three conference championships as an attackman. Pannell attended NCAA Division I Tennessee State University on a football scholarship and later became a two-time All-American for the club lacrosse team at NCAA Division I Vanderbilt University.

In the past, Pannell has also coached basketball and football. He was the director of basketball operations/assistant head coach with the Long Island (N.Y.) Surfs of the now defunct United States Basketball League from 1997-2005 and served as an assistant football coach at Westbury High School on Long Island from 1991-93.

"Reinhardt, being a small school deep in the south, is just a wonderful setting for me," Pannell said. "When I sat down and spoke with Bill Popp, the athletic director, and started talking more about the program and how I'd like it to grow, we were on the same page.

"My goals right now are to have the No. 1 team in academics, with the highest GPA, at Reinhardt and to bring in a family atmosphere. My phone is always on, my door is always open. We're going to take athletics and academics to the next level, and put Reinhardt University on the map in lacrosse."

Raised in Great Neck, N.Y., Pannell now makes his home in Snellville, Ga. He is the father of eight children, including five boys. His first four sons and oldest daughter have all been active lacrosse players.
