Watkins, Waesche Depart as FSU Asst. Coaches

Florida State regretfully announces the departures of assistant coaches Tyler Watkins and Matt Waesche. The two helped guide the Seminoles to the 2011 SELC championship and a trip to the Elite 8 in the MCLA national championship. They are leaving due to career demands outside of lacrosse.

Watkins joined the Seminole lacrosse team at the conclusion of the 2010 fall season. He quickly became an integral part of the coaching staff. The former Randolph-Macon Academic All-American worked with the Seminole offense in 2011.

"Coach Watkins was very valuable to us this year, both on and off the field" said head coach Bill Harkins, "He was a great addition and I wish we had him longer."

"I had a fantastic experience with a great group of young men and two fantastic coaches," said Watkins, "But unfortunately, due to a career opportunity, I will not be returning as assistant coach."

Waesche, who was promoted to assistant head coach in 2010, arrived in Tallahassee in 2003 along with Harkins. Since their arrival, the Seminoles have won three Conference Championships and earned seven bids to the National Championship, including three trips to the Quarterfinals and one trip to the Final Four.

"He's been with me the whole 8 years," said Harkins, "He's helped to build FSU lacrosse. We've lost our most valuable person, a great assistant coach, a great friend, and a person who always has the big picture in mind and knows the right way to build a program."

"Florida State University has been wonderful to my wife and me," said Waesche, "I can't overstate how grateful I am to Coach Harkins for giving me the opportunity to work alongside him and be a part of this program for 8 years. I'd also like to thank all of the players and their families who have been so good to us. I have a lot of great memories from my time here, and without FSU lacrosse, there's going to be a big hole in my life next year."

A search is already underway to find replacements for Watkins and Waesche.
