White House Visit: Let's Move! in Indian Country

On Monday, July 11, DC area and Native American youth visited the White House for a South Lawn Series event highlighting Let's Move! in Indian Country and celebrating lacrosse and its origins.

Students participated in lacrosse stations on the South Lawn, including "Rock the Box," the mobile lacrosse platform, sponsored by the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Among those attending and participating in the event include NLL Commissioner George Daniel and Buffalo Bandits player Brett Bucktooth, who is also a member of the Iroquois National team.

"We are privileged and honored to have participated in this event and applaud the Let's Move! in Indian Country initiative", said NLL Commissioner George Daniel. "We look forward to continuing to playing an active role in the initiative."

Let's Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady Michelle Obama, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Let's Move! in Indian Country (LMIC) was launched in May by the Office of the First Lady's Let's Move! Initiative and four federal agencies.

LMIC is an initiative to support and advance the work that tribal leaders and community members are already doing to improve the health of American Indian and Alaska Native children. As a part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative, LMIC brings together federal agencies, communities, nonprofits, corporate partners and tribes to end the epidemic of childhood obesity in Indian Country within a generation.

"Through Let's Move! in Indian Country we have an opportunity to engage Native communities, schools, tribes, the private sector, and non-profits to work together to tackle this issue head on," said First Lady Michelle Obama.

The program has also recognized the community efforts of the NLL's Minnesota Swarm and Washington Stealth clubs. The Minnesota Swarm is hosting camps and clinics for Native youth on the Fon du Lac and Prairie Island reservations and supporting the first all-Native youth box lacrosse team in Minnesota. Additionally, the NLL's Washington Stealth will be implementing similar programs with Tribes in the Pacific Northwest.
