Former Cardinal Cavanagh to Lead Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. Plattsburgh State athletics director Bruce Delventhal has named Ryan Cavanagh to the position of head men's lacrosse coach announced earlier this fall. Cavanagh assumes the role following the departure of P.J. Kavanagh, who was named head coach at Mount Union over the summer.

Cavanagh takes the helm after three seasons as the Cardinals' top assistant. He served as a student assistant coach during the 2008 season, helping Plattsburgh to an 8-8 record. In his first season as a full-time assistant, the 2009 Cardinals appeared in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

Over the past two seasons, the Cardinals have reached double-digits in wins, picking up a team-record 11 wins in 2010 and 10 in 2011.

"I am grateful for the opportunity that the administration has given me and I look forward to continuing the growth of the Cardinal Lacrosse," said Cavanagh. "I am truly excited to return to a place than I love and am eager to continue the upward trend that Plattsburgh has shown in recent years."

Cavanagh played for the Cardinals from 2005-2007 after his collegiate career began at Nassau Community College. He earned All-SUNYAC honorable mention honors as a senior and still holds Plattsburgh State records with a .630 single-season face-off winning percentage and a .581 career face-off percentage. Cavanagh was named the team's most improved player in his junior year and the team's most valuable player following his senior campaign.

As a coach, Cavanagh groomed Ryan Price into a record-setting face-off specialist for the Red and White, establishing school benchmarks for wins in a season (282) and career (722). Price also owns team ground ball records in a game (19), season (193) and career (402), while ranking among SUNYAC leaders in both statistical categories in each of his last three seasons.

Cavanagh has strengthened the program's Long Island recruiting base and has served as both the recruiting coordinator and defensive coordinator for the Cardinals. He also received the SUNY Plattsburgh Vision Award for Community in May 2010 after spearheading the team's involvement with the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a children's cancer research organization. With his guidance over the past two seasons, the Cardinals have raised over $15,000 for St. Baldrick's through numerous events including two "Cardinals Clip Cancer" games.

"I believe that we can bring this program to the next level," added Cavanagh. "I want to make the team, alumni and all the supporters of Cardinal Lacrosse proud of what we're doing."

Cavanagh, a former team captain, graduated from Plattsburgh State in May 2007 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He is a Northport, N.Y. native and a graduate of Kings Park High School.
