2012 Siena Men's Lacrosse Schedule Released

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. Siena will play a 14-game regular season slate in 2012, which includes three games against teams which finished last season nationally ranked and two games against programs which played in the NCAA Tournament. The Saints host a total of five home games at Siena Turf Field this spring, all of which will be broadcast throughout New York State on Time Warner Cable Sports.

"There are certainly no easy games on our schedule," noted first year head coach John Svec. "We hope that our stiff non-conference competition will help prepare us for conference play as we look to make another run at the MAAC Championship."

The Saints open the 2012 campaign with six straight games away from home. The season kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 19 with a lacrosse tripleheader at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

The day begins with Rutgers taking on Air Force at 11:00 a.m. The host Orange battle UAlbany in the middle game at 2:00 p.m. followed by the Saints and Hobart at 5:00 p.m. as Svec faces his former team. Svec spent the past three seasons as the Statesmen's defensive coordinator.

"We are looking forward to competing against one of the oldest programs in collegiate history (Hobart), and to play in the Carrier Dome is always a great experience," added Svec. "We are excited to be a part of a great day of lacrosse with two other top notch Division I games going on."

The Saints then face perennial national power Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field in Baltimore Feb. 25. The Blue Jays finished last season ranked third nationally in the USILA Coaches' Poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. This will be the fourth straight season in which the programs will square off in Baltimore and the game will once again be televised nationally on ESPNU at 3:00 p.m.

"Johns Hopkins will provide a great opportunity to test ourselves," said Svec. "If this team is going to reach our goals, we will need to face competition the like of Hopkins to do it. Playing at Homewood Field early in the spring is a great way to prepare ourselves for our conference opponents as well as any possible competition we may face later in May."

The Saints' grueling season-opening road slate continues with matchups at St. John's (Mar. 3), Binghamton (Mar. 10) and Hartford (Mar. 14) before concluding with the conference lid-lifter at VMI on Mar. 17. The Saints defeated all four of these teams last season, which included a key 10-9 victory over a Hartford squad which went on to make the NCAA Tournament and finish the year ranked 19th nationally.

Siena finally returns to Loudonville for their home opener on Mar. 20 in a 3:00 p.m. contest with Stony Brook. The Seawolves finished last season ranked No. 16 in the USILA Coaches' Poll. The matchup begins a span where the Saints will play six of their next seven games in the Capital Region.

The Saints continue their homestand with a matchup against Providence (Mar. 24) before hosting Jacksonville for the conference home opener Mar. 31. The Saints will once again play a six-game MAAC schedule with other home league contests including Canisius (Apr. 14) and Marist (Apr. 21) for Senior Day.

In addition to VMI, Siena will play road MAAC games against Detroit (Apr. 7) in a rematch of last season's MAAC Championship game, and Manhattan to close out the regular season Apr. 28.

For the 34th time, Siena and UAlbany will battle for Capital Region bragging rights Apr. 24 at the Great Danes' John Fallon Field. The most highly anticipated Capital Region lacrosse game of the year will be contested under the lights with a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
