Iona Names Tri-Captains for the 2012 Season

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College has named three seniors as tri-captains for the upcoming 2012 season. Defenders Amber Zimmerlink, Kelsey Sickles and midfielder Casey Scully have been tabbed to lead the team on the field, as announced by fourth-year head coach Michelle Mason.

"The selection of these three seniors by teammates and coaches came extremely easy", said Mason. "Each of them exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete at Iona College. They are hard-working in the classroom and on the field, and hold themselves and their teammates accountable for maintaining a high standard of commitment to the development of the women's lacrosse team."

"Amber, Scully, and Sickles are a major factor as to why the Gaels have made such strides over the past 3 years and their expectations for what lies ahead for this program will be the driving force that carries us to a successful future."

All three return as three-year letterwinner and starters, with Sickles and Scully adding their second year of captaincy to their résumés.

Zimmerlink, an All-MAAC First-Team member last season, has been a key member of the defensive unit for the Gaels. As a sophomore, Zimmerlink tallied a career-high 14 goals and three assists for 17 points. Last season, she scooped up 32 grounders and caused 20 turnovers.

"Amber is the type of teammate from whom players are constantly seeking feedback", commented Mason. "She naturally gives constructive criticism and praise, and accepts any feedback from teammates and coaches with an open mind. Amber is often seen at practice with an arm around a teammate, pulling them aside to help work out their frustration or struggle."

Sickles, a two-time All-MAAC honoree, stepped up on many occasions for her squad in the backfield. In her career, she has picked up 73 ground balls and has caused 42 turnovers.

"Sickles' passion is lacrosse, she is that player that is drawing out clear sets, scouting other teams in her free time, and talking lax with the coaches on a daily basis", proclaimed Mason. "Her love for this game is contagious and her ability to teach her teammates on the field is integral to the success of our defensive unit."

Scully returns to the Maroon & Gold as the top offensive threat with 68 goals and 17 assists for 85 points. As a sophomore, Scully scored a career-high 30 tallies and added nine helpers. Last season, she netted 12 goals and won 25 draw controls.

"Sclly leads by example", exclaimed Mason. "She is a machine on the field and in the weight room, and has found her voice over the past two seasons. 2012 promises to be an outstanding year for Scully as she has put in the time and effort to lead this team to a successful spring."

The Gaels will open up the season at UConn on February 18 at 1:00 p.m.
