Penn State Signs 8 to Letters of Intent for 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State head coach Missy Doherty has announced the signing of eight Nittany Lions to National Letters of Intent. The 2012 recruiting class is comprised of four midfielders, two defenders, one attacker, and one goalkeeper with five hailing from Maryland and one each from Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Colorado.

"We are extremely excited about the class of 2016 and we are looking forward to them making an impact immediately," said Doherty. "This class not only excels on the field, but they are also fantastic students and we are eager for them to arrive in Happy Valley."

The 2012 recruiting class includes:

- Amanda Ackermann, Midfielder, Stevensville, Md.
- Lauren Bosse, Defender, Towson, Md
- Madison Cyr, Attack, Westminster, Md.
- Heather Harman, Defender, Alpharetta, Ga
- Ally Heavens, Midfielder, Garnet Valley, Pa.
- Jenna Mosketti, Midfielder, Fallston, Md.
- Emi Smith, Goalkeeper, Denver, Colo.
- Erika Spilker, Midfielder, Severna Park, Md.

In her first season in Happy Valley, Doherty led the Nittany Lions to a 10-8 record, marking the first time since the 1998-99 seasons that Penn State posted back-to-back double digit win campaigns. Sixteen letterwinners and five starters return from that 2011 squad, including First Team IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region and All-ALC honoree and ALC Goalkeeper of the Year Dana Cahill.

Amanda Ackermann is a four-year starter in the midfield for Kent Island High School in Stevensville, Md. A two-time team MVP and team captain, she led the Buccaneers in scoring in 2011 en route to First Team All-North Bayside Conference honors. A two-time honorable mention all-conference performer prior to last season, Ackermann finished second on the team in all stats in 2010. ESPN listed Ackermann at No. 20 in its 2011 national ranking of attacking players and No. 76 overall.

A member of the Maryland United Lacrosse Club, Ackermann contributed to three Presidents Cup championships (2009-11), a WCLA crown in 2010, and a "Top of the Bay" title in 2011.

Personal: Amanda Diane Ackermann was born on November 26, 1994 in Annapolis, Md. to parents Joel and Pam...Plans to major in kinesiology...Intended career plans include becoming a "sports trainer at a college and then hopefully be a coach."...Chose to attend Penn State because "It was the perfect distance from home. I absolutely love the spirit and the family-like atmosphere. I love the sports teams and especially the colors. Go Blue and White!"

Missy Doherty on Ackermann: "Amanda is a fast, talented midfielder who has great scoring ability. Through the course of recruiting, we witnessed Amanda improve at an amazing rate and develop into one of the top recruits in the country. It was so much fun to watch her play, and we are really looking forward to her contributing in Happy Valley."

Lauren Bosse will continue her lacrosse career as a Nittany Lion following her graduation from Towson (Md.) High School in 2012. A three-year starter for the Generals on defense, she was a Towson Times All-Star Lacrosse Team honorable mention selection in 2011. Bosse was also a member of the Baltimore Girls Underclassmen Team at the Under Armour All-America Games. Also an accomplished volleyball player, she was a four-year starting middle hitter at THS and has participated at the club level for eight years.
