Winthrop Signs 19 for Inaugural 2013 Season

ROCK HILL, SC - - Winthrop head women's lacrosse coach John Sung has announce the signing of 19 student - athlete for the inaugural class that will begin competition in the spring of 2013.

The recruiting class is anchored by 12 players from the state of Maryland and seven from the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia.

"I am very excited with this inaugural class of talented individuals," said Sung, who was hired last summer to begin the Winthrop program. "They will create a solid foundation for the future of this program. We can't wait until our opener in 2013 at the Naval Academy.

Abigail Blevins, Midfield - St. Mary's HS/Annapolis, MD - SP Lax Club
She is a two-year varsity letterwinner in lacrosse, lettered in cross country and serves as vice president of her Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter.

Megan Brady, Attack/Midfield - Providence HS/Charlotte, NC - Midwestern Force Lacrosse Club
She is a three-year varsity letterwinner and was named her school's offensive player of the year as a sophomore. She was also named to the All-South Charlotte News Girls Lacrosse Team and was a First Team All-Conference 8 selection as a sophomore and junior.

Alexis Cantwell - Badyna, Midfield - Egg Harbor Township HS/Egg Harbor Township, NJ South Jersey Select Lacrosse Club
She is captain and a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse and also earned two letters in field hockey. She scored her 100th career lacrosse goal. during her junior year. In addition to her lacrosse and field hockey experience, she has won two national gold medals in martial arts for group weapons and solo weapons in 2005, and was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame after being seledted Junior Female Martial Artist of the Year (2004) and Junior Female Competitor of the Year (2005)

Danielle Ellis, Attack - St. Mary's HS/Annapolis, MD Maryland United Lacrosse Club
She is a two-year varsity letterwinner on the lacrosse and basketball teams. As a junior she was chosen for the DC Metro School Girls Elite Team and for the Crosse - Over tour exchange program with England lacrosse team. Her Maryland United East team was the 2010 President's Cup Champion, the 2009/2010 Top of the Bay Champion and the 2011 Summer Showcase Champion. In addition to her athletic success she was awarded the school - wide leadership award all four years and awarded Cum Laude on the national Latin exam. She is also the President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Claire Feeney, Attack Greenwich High School/Old Greenwich, CT CT Chargers Lacrosse Club
She is a four-year varsity letterwinner. As a sophomore and junior she was named First Team All-FCIAC and First Team All-State inlacrosse and field hcokey,

Jesse Filyaw - Hiu, Goalie Carlisle HS/Carlisle, PA Lanco Elite
She is a three-year letterwinner. As a junior year, she was named to the Second Team All-Mid Penns squad.

Krista Frowein, Midfield - Leonardtown HS/Leonardtown, MD SP Lax Club
She has lettered for three years. Her high school team has won the last six Southern Maryland Athletic Conference titles.

Shannon Gallagher, Attack - Academy of Holy Cross/Silver Spring, MD M&D Lacrosse Club
She has been a four-year letterwinner. She was named a First Team All-WCAC player as a sophomore and junior in lacrosse and field hockey.

Michele Hart, Midfield Atholton HS/Clarksville, MD Heros Lacrosse Club
She is a two-year letterwinner. As a junior , she was the team's leading scorer. In addition to lacrosse, she is a three-year letterwinner in basketball and two-year letterwinner in soccer..
