Mount Ida Smothers Daniel Webster, 11-3

NEWTON, Mass. (March 25, 2006) Freshmen Brett Conley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) and Leo Shidler (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) each netted hat tricks to boost the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team to an 11-3 victory over Daniel Webster College in North Atlantic Conference season opening action at the Mount Ida Athletic Stadium this afternoon. Playing in its first home game of the season, Mount Ida pushed its winning streak to four games with the triumph.

The Mustangs dominated play from the get-go, building a 3-1 advantage after one quarter of play and a 7-1 pad at the half. They outscored Daniel Webster 3-2 in the third frame and added one fourth quarter marker to seal things.

Freshman Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, R.I./Rocky Hill) capitalized on a feed from classmate Andrew Morton (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) to give the hosts an early edge less than four minutes into the contest. Conley increased Mount Ida's lead to 3-0 with a pair of first period tallies.

Daniel Webster got on the board with 3:35 remaining in the opening stanza, when senior Mike Patrick (Gardiner, Maine) scored off a pass from freshman Brian Abrahmson (Dedham, Mass.), but the Mustangs answered with four-straight goals to push their lead to 7-1 at the break.

Sophomore Brandon Bell (Loudon, N.H.) got the visitors off to a quick start with a man-up goal five minutes into the second frame, which cut the deficit to 7-2. It was not enough though, as Shidler registered two of his markers in a 4-1 Mount Ida run down the stretch.

Conley added an assist to his three goals to lead all scorers with four points. Sophomore Trevor Bergeron (Candia, N.H./Londonderry) dished out a pair of assists, and classmate Anthony DiMaio (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) chipped in with a goal and a helper.

Mount Ida out-shot the Eagles 45-16 and won 14 of the 18 face-offs. Junior goaltender Kyle Bowler (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) made eight saves en route to his second win of the year for the Mustangs, while Daniel Webster freshman netminder Caleb Keay (Exto, Pa.) suffered the loss despite stopping 16 shots.

Mount Ida (4-1, 1-0 NAC) returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Norwich University for a non-league contest beginning at 3:00 p.m. Daniel Webster will take the field again on Monday, as it visits Nichols College for an out-of-conference clash starting at 3:00 p.m.
