#18 Clan Tops W. Washington to Open Season

BURNABY, BC (February 8, 2012) No. 18 Simon Fraser opened the 2012 regular season on Saturday, February 4 with a 16-12 win over regional PNCLL Division II opponent Western Washington.

Five different Clan players posted multi-point games, led by sophomore attack Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) who registered a game-high 7 points with 6 goals and 1 assist. Freshman midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) 3g and junior attack Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) 1g, 2a each contributed 3 point efforts in the win, while a total of nine SFU players featured in the Clan's scoring.

The game, played in front of approximately 150 fans on a warm and sunny day at SFU's Terry Fox Field, marked the Clan's 17th straight opening day victory, a streak dating back to the inception of the program in 1996.

With only six players gone from last season and no seniors on the Clan's 2012 roster, Fraser continues to expect big things from their underclassmen, with three freshmen, three sophomores and four juniors in their starting line-up to begin the year.

Craig, who lead the MCLA in both Goals (100) and Points (132) in 2011, provided a familiar face to open the scoring as the sophomore featured in all of Fraser's first 5 goals, scoring 4-times and adding one helper, to put the Clan up 4-0 after 15:00 minutes and 5-1 early in the second quarter. From there the tide would begin to change in the Vikings favor as 9:00 minutes in first half penalties, including 5:30 in the second frame, would begin to take their toll, propelling a 7-1 Western Washington run and putting SFU down 8-6 at the break.

Battling through the adversity, Simon Fraser would regain their composure out of halftime, scoring the first four goals of the third quarter and regaining the lead at 10-8. With all the momentum in the second quarter, Western Washington would be unable to keep pace with Fraser's offense down the stretch, as the Clan outscored WWU 10-4 over the final 30:00 minutes to claim the 16-12 win.

Despite outscoring the Vikings 14-4 over three quarters, a disastrous second quarter would put the Clan on their heels at the midway point of the game and reignite a long standing rivalry between the regional foes. Fraser will need to learn from their mistakes quickly as they travel to Boise, Idaho this Thursday to play the defending MCLA National Champion, Brigham Young Cougars in a neutral site contest on Saturday, February 11, before facing-off against the host Boise State Broncos the following day on Sunday, February 12. Both games will be played on the famous blue turf inside Bronco Stadium.
