Kapanen to Coach Finnish National Team

North Central College head coach Jenni Kapanen will have the opportunity to coach in international competition for the first time this summer, as she has been named the head coach for national in her home country of Finland and will lead the squad at the 2012 European Championships in June.

She recently presided over a training camp which will assist her in finalizing the roster for the tournament and will conduct another preparatory training camp prior to the start of the championships. The European Championships are held every four years, and this year's event, a 12-team tournament, will be contested June 20-30 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Kapanen, who has served as North Central's head women's soccer coach since 2004, started the Cardinals' women's lacrosse program in 2009 and is preparing for her fourth season as its head coach. During the 2011 campaign, North Central finished with an overall record of 7-7 and qualified for the inaugural Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament.

Finland is relatively new on the international scene in lacrosse, having established the Finnish Lacrosse Association in 2001. Finland's women's national team first competed in the European Championships in 2008, and it has been confirmed as a participant in the upcoming Women's Lacrosse World Cup, to be held July 11-20, 2013 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
