No. 5 Duke Holds off Richmond in Shootout
Richmond tallied two goals just before halftime to cut Duke's lead to 12-7 at the intermission. The first half belonged to the Blue Devils as Duke led 23-15 in shots and 14-6 in draw controls.
Three unanswered goals to start the second half, capped by Maurer's free position goal with 28:32 remaining, extended the Blue Devils' advantage to 15-7. Despite the deficit, the Spiders continued to fight, but Richmond could not overcome Duke's lead in the end.
For the game, the Blue Devils held a 37-28 advantage in shots, while dominating the draw 22-10. Both goalies registered double-digit save totals with Richmond's Victoria Roebuck making 16 and Duke senior Mollie Mackler recording a season-high 13.
Duke will have a short turnaround prior to its next outing with the Blue Devils taking on No. 1 Northwestern Sunday, February 19 in Durham.
