Hood Holds on to Outgun Waynesburg in Opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa.--Senior Kati Vu and freshman Bailey Czech of Hood College (1-0) had a hand in 15 of Hood's 17 goals on the day, as the Blazers held on for a narrow 17-16 nonconference triumph over Waynesburg University (0-1) Saturday afternoon.

Vu and Czech pocketed five goals apiece and combined for five assists in the win. Caitlin Lawrence netted four goals and an assist, Julia Banks scored twice and assisted on two other scores and Katie McPhail registered her first goal in a Blazer uniform to round out the scoring.

Hood led 10-5 at halftime and took its largest lead of the game, 15-8, on an unassisted score by Czech midway through the second half. The Yellow Jackets put together a huge rally in the final nine minutes of regulation, scoring six times to draw within one with 2:39 to play.

Banks controlled the ensuing draw for Hood but the Yellow Jackets forced a turnover in the final minute and put the ball in Toria Shepherd's stick; Shepherd had already scored five times on the afternoon. But Hood keeper Helene Butler came up a with a huge save on Shepherd's seventh shot of the game with 20 seconds left to preserve the victory for the Blazers.

Butler finished with 10 saves on the day and collected eight ground balls while the Blazer defense, including Jennifer Fischer and Brigid Ayer, forced four Waynesburg turnovers on the day.

Maria Shepas recorded eight goals for Waynesburg in the losing effort.

Hood hosts its first game of the season Tuesday against Capital Athletic Conference rival York College (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m.
