Belmont Abbey Pulls Away for Victory over Erskine

The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team outscored Erskine 12-2 in the second half after holding an 8-4 halftime lead to earn a 20-6 win over the visiting Erskine College Flying Fleet this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Abbey moves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while Erskine falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas.

After Erskine scored the first goal of the second half to pull to within 8-5, the Crusaders scored two straight to extend the lead to 10-5. Erskine's Samantha Jones scored what turned out to be the Flying Fleet's last goal with 25:21 left to close the lead to 10-6, but the Crusaders scored the final ten goals of the game to coast to the victory.

The first half was a close contest as Burns opened the scoring to give Erskine the early lead, but goals from Emily Hudgins and another from Elyse Mohn, the first of her game-high five tallies, put the Crusaders ahead 2-1. After Erskine knotted the game at two less than a minute later, Lindsay Connolly moved the Abbey on top for good with a free position shot at the 21:07 mark. Connolly scored three first half goals on four shots, and her free position shot started a string of four-straight Abbey tallies to extend the cushion to 6-2.

Belmont Abbey outshot Erskine 41-17 and also won the battles in draw controls (16-12) and ground balls (34-19). Mohn led all players with five goals on eight shots, while Hudgins added four on six shots. Megan Patton also fired home four winners, coming on eight shots. Connolly totaled three, while Molly Schaefer scored twice. Rebecca Diggs and Laura Dowd both had one. Ariel Walker handed out three assists, while Connolly, Hudgins and Mohn logged two helpers each. Diggs added one. Dowd won eight draw controls and scooped up five ground balls. Goalkeeper Tory Morgan stopped nine shots and totaled three ground balls.

Burris and Alesia Jerrells led Erskine with two goals apiece, while Kelly Dalziel and Denise Zani both had one. Dalziel and Jerrells both had one assist.
