Denison Thunders Past Waynesburg in Opener

Denison opened the 2012 season with a rousing 21-2 victory over Waynesburg University from a blustery Piper Stadium. The Big Red scored 13 first half goals en route to the 19-goal victory.

Just six minutes into the game Denison took a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals from Olivia Shiland and one from Katherine Palms. In a span of less than one minute DU reserves Erin Keller and Molly Chapman would strike quickly, making the score 6-0 in favor of DU.

Waynesburg would get on the scoreboard when Toria Shepherd converted an 8-meter attempt but DU would close out the half on a 5-1 run to take an 11-goal lead into the intermission.

Overall, four Denison players turned in hat-trick performances with Palms, Shiland, Molly Sbrega and Chapman all scoring three goals. DU was led in scoring by Alex Thurner who scored two goals and handed out four assists. Lisa Feroli matched Thurner with two goals and four assists to go along with her two draws.

Senior Carly Tschantz picked up right where she left off in 2011 with a game-high nine draws. She also added one assist and one caused turnover. Defensively, Denison forced the Yellow Jackets into 24 turnovers, 14 of which were caused. Kiersten Dussinger led the team with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Denison outshot Waynesburg 39-3 and won 23 of 25 draws attempted. Denison's trio of goalies faced only three shots and did not make a save. Waynesburg goalie Erin Burry posted 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.

The victory marked the first in the head coaching career of Denison's Kristen Ramey.

Denison improves to 1-0 and will take on Sewanee at Centre College in Danville, Ky. on Saturday (March 3) at 10:00 a.m.
